Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

As far as Im concerend Harry Peverely was handy at whatever he turned his hand to, he had a Foden Stroka at Hewits with a 12 speed FGB, He could make that gear box talk, I m a Foden man myself & I could manage the Foden 12 speed no bother, but when I got talking to Harry he was used to the 2 stickers, whilst just being a boy learner I had to admit to him my first Foden that I bought in 1973 was an air shift movement for the 12 speed, His comments were If you can drive a Foden you will do for me, well not many drivers have said that to me, so I took It as a real compliment from a driver who was a lot older than me, & served all his employers during his lifetime very well [RIP]Harry your mems will go forever, Regards LARRY.

Hi Larry,I drove a Foden VJR546H with the 12 speed box for Fergies for some time and thought i new all about the gearbox and could make it talk. Then some time later Vince Billham told me that {for talks sake]if you were in any gear climbing a hill and you just let it pull till it nearly stalled, it would automaticley select 1st gear. This is something i never knew if it was true,You may well know the answer.

Yes it was very true, the bloke that explained the 12 speed Foden layout was a second cousin of mine, he had quite a few Fodens Him & his younger brother were fanatics about Fodens, My first Foden 8 wheeler Gardner 150 12 sp,Fbox with a gear for every hill I remember hauling stone from Newlandside Quarry at Stanhope, & overtaking Gordie Henderson driving a Fergy wagon loaded with cement, It may have been a 6 wheeler AEC ?, BLOODY HELL THATS A LONG TIME AGO, we are all retired now or even long gone, Regards Larry.

Hi Lawrence
I can remember my dad drove a foden 8 wheel bulk blower for an agricultural merchant,it had a gardner 180 and foden gearbox. He was the only one who could drive it properly no one would drive when he was on holiday. He also worked for fergys for a short while he drove a dennis four wheeler leading out of eastgate on cement. he also used to do paper reels from blyth docks with either a foden or aec mandator artic. this was in early seventies.
he died at age 58 but would have been 76 this year
cheers
mick

hiya,
What did Ridley’s carry ■■, can’t have been much industry out in the sticks where they was based,
used to see loads of them up and down the A1 but never got to know any of the drivers, they did
seem to have plenty of motors and was they all vans??,can’t remember seeing any roped and sheeted
loads, but can’t remember 10 minutes ago, so they might have had them and I hadn’t noticed.
thanks harry long retired.

And im driving this one this week,

KinkyHiab:
I was quite interested in the earlier posts about Cape Insulation. I worked for a small company called TR Transport in the early 80’s. I had an ex Elddis 1619 Merc which was WFT 754T and later an ex Elddis F10 with a very similar registration number. Perhaps someone knows who drove them originally. They also had a 16.232 MAN which I think was ex Monarch Transport. We later got two new Seddon Atkinson 311’s with 10 litre ■■■■■■■■ Most of our south bound work was out of Cape, Washington, we mostly did the south west. Back loading out of Western Freights Bristol or Bartletts Bridgwater and also Quantock Preserving, Bridgwater. We also did a lot of polystyrene packaging for a company called Trondex at Northampton. I certainly remember Ridleys of Allendale ran out of Cape Insulation as well as Capes own Bedford’s and also Shepherds did quite a lot out of there. I remember one of their drivers was a character called (i think) Sammy Livermore.
These are the only two that I have pictures of.

Is that the yard at double row Sunny Delightful ? Phil Moody would he happen to have owned a Triumph Trident
T150 in the 70`s.

Yes,that was the yard next to Delcor furniture. Phil did have a trident in the 70,s and so did I. I’m pretty sure Phil has still got his. He works at Pughs as a site foreman. I’m driving an eight legger.

SCOTTISH LAND AEC-690
BASED IN NEWCASTLE AND GLASGOW

I have only just seen this post. This takes me back.

I drove a few of these Scottish Land AEC’s on an opencast many years ago, some of them had the Leyland 505 engine fitted and I am pretty sure some were badged as Euclid’s as well . I have some pictures somewhere I will try to find them out and get them posted.

I was never in the driving seat, it didn’t look as tidy as this though.

Hello Harry,
I obtained this photo off Fred Robinson when i was delivering to his depot many years ago,
I may be wrong but i think it would have a 4 cyl two stroke diesel.
I think we will have to wait for the experts to advise us.
