Aye Harry they didnt hang about in those days, I think they had some work out of a firm in Mexbrough, I may be wrong , but Im sure Bill Wallum mentioned this once when he back loaded us, of course thats a bloody long , long, time ago, & we are still here, but getting older by the minute, so go on have another MALT as Im , doing before I get told to go to bed , Regards Larry.
Im sure the firm at Washington was called Newalls Insulation when I first loaded there they had some TK Bedford artics with a heavey duty steel plated floor to increase stability in high winds, I recall Catterick being a bad area for wagons getting blown over, The name Cape came later. Regards Larry.

It was Newalls
Washington Chemical Co before that and just called the Chemical by locals, my Grandad drove one of the works Steam Engines then the newer Diesels came in just before he retired around 1968/70. There is a pic somewhere on here of a Turner and Newalls TK with single axle box trailer probably the ones mentioned, just found it on one of my discs, believe the colours were Red and White. Franky.

Aye F/D thats the motor, It runs in my mind that they were contract hire ones from Fisher Renwick Ltd, Do you remember the regs on them, ? Regards Larry.
Blimey fraid not Larry, it was strange though going into Cape when I was at Van Hee knowing it was the same place my Grandad worked years before, although it wasn’t as big as in his days. Today, like many other extinct factories and plants you wouldn’t think anything had been there, just a few derelict buildings left now, waiting to be pulled down and houses built on the site no doubt. Cheers Franky.

hi lawrence they used to call it newalls i used to stop at the digs at mossley with a driver called tommy marsden and i used to shunt there for jakie adams with joe bell regards jimmy
Yeah, I wouldn’t mind seeing an Ellis motor, surely someone must have a pic, I started my Fitting apprenticeship there 1968. AEC Mercury’s and Mandators MkV and Ergo cabbed, a Mammoth Minor tractor, 1418 Merc’s bonneted and flat front, Ford D1000’s an odd ERF and GUY Big J’s just before they sold up. Good set of drivers and fitters too.
Franky.

0Well Ive just come accross this old reciept for my first motor car £20.00. The Co I bought it off belonged to Alfie Ellis the haulage man Green motors did a lot of graft out of Commercial Plastics, I wonder, has anyone got any pictures of his motors, he also did the work out of De La Rue the money printers ■■?< Regards Larry.
hiya,
Larry my first motor was also a Vauxhall 12/6 of 1936 vintage, overhead valve 6 cylinder engine, you could stand a threepenny bit on the rocker box when ticking over also a funny bottle type independent suspension it was produced/registered in May 1936 the month and year I was born the registration number was CW 10 , scrapped after about two years after I bought it (gearbox gone) it was 23 years old cost me £12, still had the old foldy up logbook until it was put through the shredder accidently a couple of years ago, the reg would be worth a mint now, wish I could resurrect it, it would get me a decent bottle or two methinks.
thanks harry long retired.
Hi Lawrence, I vaguely remember the green trailers in Commercial Plastics, I remember seeing one standing solo on its own landing legs while they were loading it with rolls of Fablon ■■ at Commercial Plastics These heavy rolls when stacked against the headboard soon overcame th point of balance and the trailer back end rose slowly into the air as two lads walked down the platform carrying another roll each, they panicked and jumped to the ground. After I got loaded roped and sheeted setting off along the Coast Road that day I remember a commentary on the radio covering the launch of a Russian Sputnik, by the time I reached Jesmond Rd in about 10 to 15 minutes the commentator was relaying how many 100s of miles the Sputnik had covered out into space. This was about 1965 when I was running a BMC FHK 140 horizontal engined model.
A radio that worked in 1965!! pure luxury
Ps don’t know how you
heard it above the engine screaming. regards Kevmac47.
