Hi Lawrence, I dropped my wife off at the new St Mary’s Inn at Stannington last Wednesday for a lunch with some of her former college friends, in the meantime I called in at North Whitehouse Farm on the chance that Keith Slater would be there. Luckily he was sitting in the cafe with his driver as he cannot drive now due to eyesight problems, also he he tells me that Sheila his wife died last year. It was good to see him and have a crack about the good old days delivering hen meal to Bardon Mill and Stannington. It is 34 years since I last delivered at Stannington and saw Keith. He says tell the rest of the former drivers from Carr’s Flour Mills that he is still a grumpy old (zb) !!
Cheers Leyland 600

I was speaking to Kieth just a few weeks before his wife passed away He said she was very poorley at that time, I rented a Atcost Building that he owned at the White House , We used it it for quite some time as our operating center, Kieth is a great bloke IMO, His son Doanald ran a Leyland 8 wheeler tipper with a blower system for delivering animal feed , I belive he now works at the Whitehouse Farm where you vistited, Regards Larry.

Hiya,
That’d sort the men from the boys Larry.
thanks harry, long retired.

Jim’s son Iain will confirm whether or not his dad drove that Scammell. Jim, at 89 now, only gave up his HGV licence in the last couple of years!!! Another possible driver who is still around is Bob Casey, he also worked at Powell’s. His sons, Darren and Sean run Tyneside Express Tranport, I’m sure we’ll hear from them also. Regards Kev.

How vehicle specs have changed over the years, when you look at how close those steer axles on the Scammell are set then looking at to-days 8 wheelers you could actually fit a third steering axle between the the two axles,I wonder what the thinking at Scammell was in those days to fit the two steer axles so close as to nearly touch ? Cheers Dennis.

Hiya,
Dennis, fact the bigger the space on the front two steering axles the heavier the steering.

Hiya “H” Happy New Year and many of them !!With regard to my “laymans” technical question about the steer axles on 8 wheelers I am quite happy to defer to one of our ancient  members as there was none of these Scammells running when I started out in the industry but they will have been fairly numerous when you entered the “job” I guess so first hand knowledge from “the horse’s mouth” is good enough for me :wink:regards Dennis.

Hiya,
Dennis it didn’t matter when the power steering came into vogue you could bung the
steering axles as far apart as you wished then and when the axles un-powered were
nearly touching you could with a bit of clever loading take the weight off the handle-
bars quite a bit a bit handier if you was pulling a pup about as you will well know.

The death of Norman Nattress from Sacriston at the age of 70 has been announced in this mornings Journal.
Norman and his late Father Harry were well known as Hay and straw dealers in the North East. Norman’s last wagon, a six wheel Volvo and drag is pictured somewhere on this thread. Tyneside
