Hi Stewood & Larry D, I remember loading out of Thermalite adjacent to Agecroft power station Swinton back in 1965 soon after I started with my own wagon a BMC FHK 140. I loaded blocks for a house being built on Coniscliffe Rd or nearby Darlington. I remember having to unload myself as everyone had gone home for the weekend but was instructed to tip them by the guy living next door, anyway got home for the weekend. Although I knew of the Cambois plant I never had anything to do with them.
Cheers Leyland 600.

theo james yard was originally burn concrete who moved from stakeford was it not . jehIve been thinking about the precast factory, IIRC, Was it not called Whites or something like that Jeh, Or am I thinking of something else, â â , Regards Larry.
did they take over nw concrete products barrasford or visa versa

I moved a lot of top soil from a site behind Theo Jamesâ yard and would use their weighbridge now and then. This was late eighties.
Not sure if It was a chimney or some tall structure in the yard which IIRC had a square top with the previous owners name painted on. It may have been BURN.

Tyneside your right about the big tower I can remember a hand full of drivers dismantled it over quite a few weekends lol
When on for Ge Armstrong & Gallachers used to bring blocks from Purfleet & Beenham up to Blyth when they stopped making them then they closed it & started using a yard at Felling then shut that & started using Ebchester

The land was owned by Northumberland Whinstone before Theo James bought it,They made the concrete kerb stones there.
Tyneside was correct stating it had a tall metal structure on top of the hopper that was fed by the conveyor with the name on,You tipped the aggregate in the bottom left corner of the yard that was fed into the conveyor up to the hopper which had the metal structure on top.
Theo did put his his name or initials on the structure for a short time before it was pulled down.I may be wrong but i dont think there was ever a brick chimney there.
Regards
F Troop.

Hi all, does anyone remember Thermalite at Cambios Blyth? I used to go along with the drivers in the late 70s early 80s Jock, Tweedy and Jackie (my dad worked in the factory) . They had Leylandâs and seddons 301/401. Remember John Gornells and Nicholsonâs been in there as sub contractors.Aye Thermalite thatâs a blast from the past, I used to load out of there in the 80s, local work & sometimes a load for their Manchester works at Agecroft, Also loaded there a few times for Croydon, One of their drivers came to work for Boistons at Seaton Burn on an 8 wheeler Foden Tipper he lived at Cresswell IIRC, he was called Jack â â ? it was decent work, But sometimes when heading south you could have problems at the Tyne Tunnel depending who was on, Happy days, Regards Larry. PS Was it Jack Davison perhaps.â â
When i started at Fergusons in 1968 Thermilite at Cambios was 1 of several factories that made blocks.
George Kinghorn was the general manager and Cecil Swan was the hands on engineer,Olso a local lad from Bedlington and a young girl in the traffic office.
They had a d series ford tipper that did about 8 load of fly ash out of the power station to the factory per day.
We regulary loaded out of the Airth factory and brought blocks down to the n/east or Hams Hall factory Sutton Coalfield @Swinton factory at Manchester.
Fergusons and Wakeman transport of Whitley Bay had lorries based at the Swinton factory to do the Haulage.
Can remember one of the cambios drivers was killed between Longtown and Brampton when he skidded and ended in the river nr Irthing Bridge.
Im not sure of the year the factory was closed and every thing was sold and levelled as it still stands today.
[Tyneside]
Theo James bought a place at Sleekburn.Regards
F Troop.
Cheers F Troop, the factory closed in 92 they had closed the Scottish factory couple of years before and closed part of the Manchester factory also in 92.
I can remember George Kinghorn and Cecil Swan,Cecil was the manger when I started there in 88,Do you remember a lad called Bob Lee he was the tipper driver doing the ash from the power station? He removed the tipper body clean off the back of the truck when he hit the railway bridge on the Cambios road!!
They had Moodys do the ash from then on.
Cheers
StephenIIRC There was a 8 wheeler did some work out of there, They had a ramp so as the loading shovel could clear the top of the body, It used to come into Tilcons at Blaydon now & then for sand, It was a Beige colour, I never new who owned it though, Regards Larry.
Hi Larry, think the tipper Thermalite had was possibly owned by them. There was a brick company that came in called Whites Cramlington area? The transport manger at Thermalite was a lad called Harry Stroud.
Would be great if any had any photos
Thanks for the replies.
Stephen
A that was James White Brick Merchants from Fox Hunters Ind Est Whitley Bay they had a depot at East Cramlington, It runs in my mind that Jackie Davison drove for Whites after leaving Boistons, â â , Regards Larry.

We used to load at Hams Hall on a regular basis, It was great when we used to tip at Gateshead, But when it changed to Ebchester it was a pain in the arse, We also used to load at Branston with tiles for there , The bloke in charge was a right awkward Twit, He would go out of his way to make things difficult when you were delivering there, He used to insist that you wore a had hat when you were on the trailer, What a plonker IMO, Happy long gone days Eh, Regards Larry.

I never heard any of the old time drivers mention there being one, it wouldnât
have been needed with all the Tayforth Caledonian and BRS depots still in and
around that area for fuel and return loads, sorry canât help.
