Evening all, when Geoff Parry designed those trailers he was years ahead of the game, and no one has ever bettered the design!

Cheerio for now.

even saviem, , ys those trailors were ideal for the job. I rember once we had been I rosslare 2 days because bad weather. I rang the port to see if they were taking us , and to my surprise they said yes. when we left port the sea was unreal but thse trailors never moved. Geoff was a very clever man and our worst ttime was when we lost him at 53. I still say we would still be going if he was at the helm '. keith hope your ok the lairage at holy head was some one elses but we did use it a lot. thanks saviem and Keith keep writing

Evening all, Charlie, spent many a happy hour with Geoff, and Alma, real people, and so typical of the industry that I remember…full of “real” people!

Cheerio for now.

Hello Charliemjp, please excuse my curiosity but how was the lower deck arranged? Were there ramps down into & up out of the centre ‘well’ section or was it on a lift of some kind?

Incidently, my Uncle drove for AE Stuart from Exeter & for a while drove an Ergo Mandator wagon & drag that was ex MJ Parry.

Thanks in advance, Andrew.

I remember picking up from Birkenhead in 1975/76 … 20 wagons maybe more all lined up, drivers standing around smoking and chatting - then you’d get the nod and pull up to and reverse into a pen to pick up best Irish beef.

Wish I’d taken photos - Haydons had 5 or 6 trucks there that day, all behind each other - that was the famous drawbar incident - about 20 attempts to back the swine in behind an ERF 6 legger LOL!

hello all , pebbles 74 , yes your spot on loadig low lowders. dropped 2 ramps to load top 3 sections, lift ramps up and then lift trap door to load bottem 2 sections.drop trap door leaving back section. I had that madator and trailor new reg GNT163N and I took it to stuarts on a sunday. that was ok but return trip not so good. I had to pick a s type Bedford up from Honiton dairy it was destined for minsterly by home it had big wheels and had been used to s pread waste on fields. I put trde plates no and headed north on m5 at 45 miles a hour, I got it to glouster and engine mounting broke so dumped it and hitched home.

gardener 120, hope your keeping ok. yes there were plenty off trucks birken head, I used to find the 8 wheeler the harest to back with trailor no lock. we used to do 7 drops west midlands abbotoirs with8 wheeler and trailor most days. I am the same wish I taken more photos cheers charlie

“I’m jus middlin” as they say in Biddulph Charlie!

All the markets from my youth have gone it seems - Newcastle u Lyme (Monday) Congleton (Tuesday) Leek (Wednesday) Banbury (Thursday) Beeston (Friday) and Uttoxeter (Saturday) - we also went to Chelford on a Thursday and Mold on a Friday - can’t remember which day Crewe was - nearly all bloody housing estates or supermarkets now

Good evening ,
I am looking for a period Cattle Container 7.4m (24ft ) with or with out a luton to go on a 1978 Seddon Atkinson 400 (preferably Thornes or Parkhouse), in reasonable condition , also wanted is a Chereau 7.4m fridge box from 70’s or 80’s again in reasonable condition to go on an ERF C series drawbar chassis . and leads or contacts would be greatly appreciated .
Thanks for now

Hi charlie , was any of those in the West Mids , Devis ,Barrets and Baird at Great Bridge , and Marsh and Baxter Brierley hill ? regards Keith .

Sorry to interrupt, but Marsh & Baxter’s was a regular delivery with pigs from Gloucester for us in the 1950s.
It was also the first time I had heard the local accent when a passing youngster shouted to his pal across the street, “Av yaw sin ar kid, babbs?”

Yes, that was a handy “local” job for us - on the last roundabout of the ring road- before heading back in to the market to load for further afield. No weight limit in town in those days, so it was a quick nip up Bristol Road & Southgate Street to ogle all the young ladies!
A wee bit off post for the Shropshire thread, but at least it’s about livestock!
Thanks for your comments regarding my ramblings.

hi all retiered and kingswinsford, when at baxters Gloucester was there a bloke living in the house by entrance came and unloaded you. keith I never answered you on north devon meats, yes we used to go there a lot , always rember the road was very narrow in places used to meet a firm coming the other way called tolley and smale or something sim they did not hang about. then we got a bloke from be low bistol to pull our trailors .we used to drop them on a big Whitbread pub car park and bring empty back.on baxters northhampton we went to there plac in small village and later to the new one, if me mem serfs me right they had one in Chelmsford. cheers CHARLIE
