Dreva, many thanks once again for posting yet another brilliant L.D.D. I have never seen this one before but it had me scrambling around the house for some of me old photies. I never thought I would ever see that little white building again after 33 years. There were a couple of them on the Trans Saharan Route in 1975 between Im Salah in Algeria and Zinder which was the border between Niger and Nigeria.
They are actually Mosque’s and legend of the Sahara say’s that any travellers who pass by must circle them three times for good luck or their journey will not be a safe one. The trouble was that we didn’t know if you had to circle them clockwise or anti clockwise, so to be on the safe side we went around three times in each direction. It must of worked because four month’s later we arrived in South West Africa but that’s another story.
I take my hat off to those three guys as it was hard enough getting to Kano in Nigeria, in a Ford Transit and a Landrover. The only large trucks that I can remember seeing were Saviems, Renaults and Berliet’s as Morocco, Algeria and Niger were all ex French colonial countries, French being the main language of the Sahara. The only British truck that I saw that had crossed the Sahara was parked at the Kano Club camping ground in Nigeria. The Kano Club was where all the British expats in the area used to drink. It had an open air swimming pool and a secured camping ground.
The lorry was an orange coloured ex Army Bedford R.L. four wheel drive and was on it’s way to Kenya in East Africa. Strangely enough the driver recognised me but I had trouble remembering him at first. It turned out that six years earlier we had both been in the R.A.F. together and had been on the same six week exercise in Germany. ( You meet the most interesting people in the most unusual places.)
His name was John Finch Davis and he drove for a company called Encounter Overland from I.I.R.C. Hertfordshire. John was carrying 21 passengers, the back of the truck had bus seats fitted along the sides, it had rolled up canvas side’s and it was pulling a small two wheeled trailer that contained tents and cooking equipment.
I knew that I had a picture of it some where, the trouble is that I have got over two hundred pictures of the trip but they are nearly all on 35mm slides, some are in black and white and a few are in colour, the one of the Bedford is on a slide so next time I am in town I shall see if somebody can try and put it on to a print.
Five years later I was in Aydens garage in Istanbul and I was talking to a driver from Encounter Overland who was on his way to Singapore with a K.M. Bedford and 20 passengers. I asked him if he knew John and he said he had worked with Gentleman John in South America for three months a couple of years before.
Sorry Dreva I am drifting off a bit here.
I have been wanting to post some pictures on buillits Middle East / North Africa thread for some time now to see if those drivers who went to Tamanrasset, (which was the only stretch of tarmac road for thousands of miles ), remembers seeing a couple of these landmarks. I was hoping that Boyzee might have some more pictures of the Sahara to share but if he hasn’t then I hope he likes mine.

Regards Steve.

Dreva, thanks for the P.M. with the info about the scanner, I might have to do a bit more research.

Of course, there are millions of places where I have not been. :frowning:

If somebody who you meet says " It’s a small world " tell them that they should really try and get out a bit more.
I have no regrets at seeing the places where I have been.
I only regret not seeing other places. :frowning:

B.T.W. Dreva, have you got that L.D.D. with Harry Uffingham going to the Middle East in the Seddon Atkinson pulling for Whittles
