Old haulage companies

I went past yesterday afternoon and there were still a couple of Gobowen’s 20’ skellies at the back of the yard.

It wasn’t very long ago that they were still working out of there - never mind, another one bites the dust…

Have you heard the news about 34?

Parkers of Bolton had AEC Mercury dropsides for carrying steel tube from Markland Scowcroft at Bolton
Knowles Vanlines were the Ramsbottom company that had ammalgamated with Dickinson Transport to form Inter County Express which was later sold to TNT. Knowles run an ageing fleet of AEC s Leylands Allbions with the exception of 2 Leyland Buffaloes 2 ERF 180 gardners all of which were wagon and drags a 120 Gardner ERF which was a flat which my father drove from new. Dickinsons was a much newer fleet that consisted mainly ERF s and Scanias 2 Seddon Atkinson sleeper cabs and some Leyland Clysedale tractor units. George Dickinson died about 5 years ago in a horse riding accident " a top man " and Alf Smith who owned Knowles is stil alive i believe and living in the Isle of Man
Others were:
Knowles Vanlines-Bolton(?), AEC Mercury boxvans
David Hall-Bury, Commer 2 strokes
H&A Pate -Bury , AEC flats ,soaked up by Sheldon&Co (I think)
Dewsbury Haulage-Bury, Volvo & Foden tippers & brick wagons whom I never worked for but could say lots.
Hinchcliffes-Walmersley who seem to be back on the scene though an Actros in their colours was knockin about long after they had sold up.
J&E Transport- Haslingden & Dundee , AEC vans & flats part of Scottish BRS. Their depot is now apartments
Bengal Transport-Manchester, AEC Mercury dropsides
Whiteoak Transport -Colne, Fiats & Fords with hanging beef out of Borthwicks at Colne
Stringfellows-Shuttleworth and later Heywood Ind Estate, seemed to stick with Leylands to the death, last saw them with a Roadtrain on nights several years back.
A name I cant remember is the company at Ramsbottom that became Inter County Express and was taken over by TNT. They seemed to specialise in running to the South West with ERF 4 wheelers

Haven’t seen British Road Services mentioned I worked at the Tunstal Depot in the 60s used to have a 8 legger leyland octopus and trailor. Also Longton Transport that went years ago had the Guy warrior on there did mostly London area .Then there was A J Wass of Longton don’t know if they are still going but I do know the last place I worked is still going Basset Roadways of Tittensor when I left my wagon was a cut down version of the one in the picture made into a tractor unit RBF 672 used to have the normal four speed box and the 12 speed split box was opperated by a long iron bar allong side the gear lever.

Wheel Nut:
I was reminiscing about old names from the tanker industry with a mate.

Thomas Allen

JF HAULAGE TRAFFORD PARK

Wheel Nut:
Charles Lucy
Yeoward Brothers

Abbey Road Tanks

All 3 compaines are the same and where owned by the same person… the guy packed up and went to spain years ago and left his sons in charge. Charlie Lucy’s son also called charlie left abbey and bought Armet tankers.

Abbey is now ran by Mark and Steven lucy, who are both [zb], and belive me, they are!

Paul Hinchliffe has started up on his own after driving for Fred Smith, and has a couple of motors on the road. He drives an XF Space Cab, and I passed his dad (Geoff) in a very tidy ERF EC pulling a tautliner up Windy Hill yesterday morning.

The traditional Hinchliffe livery is back, the only revisions being P & M instead of J & H, and Ramsbottom instead of Walmesley.

A much welcomed return to the Lancashire haulage scene.

I think the Inter-County Express firm you refer to was Wilkinsons, but I can’t be sure about that.

Marky, we had a Wilkinsons round here, they got bought out by federal express, as did all the other depots as far as I know. the depot is still there but is ran by nightfreight now.

Is francis lee still running motors? Come to that, another fotball star haulier roger hunt a.k.a hunt bros, they still running?

Hunt Bros are definitely still running - thay have been re-fleeting recently with new ERF ECTs.

Not so sure about Franny Lee. I thought I heard that his paper firm had been sold to someone else. maybe someone else can confirm this?
