Old Firms in Oxford Area

I wonder if Nathan is waiting with his tippers and machines and “RB1” to make a start on the new runway at Heathrow.Cheers Dennis.

Too busy Dennis, been driving a 360 loading myself near Leatherslade Farm at Oakley. Ring a bell? Just over the fence, was the Great Train Robbers’ hideout.
I haven’t found the missing money though.

You never know your luck Nathan, you may dig up a load of Scotch notes as I don’t think the Great Train robbers reckoned them  But I’ve heard of using a metal detector for locating buried treasure but don’t you think that using a 360’ excavator is going a bit too far :open_mouth: :open_mouth: Cheers Dennis.

Does anyone know or remember a driver on H W Dines and Timbmet by the name of John Beasley and know if he is still around.

I knew a John Beasley who was an od for J. Curtis, and finished up driving for Smiths Bletchington. Came from Bicester if I recall.

Driving digger and tipper today.

Smiths Bletchingtons’ first new motor of the year has arrived at the dealer…
It’s a 12t Daf LF with a 210 engine.
…I saw it at Daf Oxford this afternoon minus numberplates and signwriting, just thought I would share the news first. :smiling_imp:
I was having a butchers at some Daf demonstrators.

I don’t think that’s the same John Beasley although he did come from Bicester but I doubt he was ever an OD, last I heard he was driving for Timbmet.

The chap on the left is Bill Ralf ex RAF ex Police went to Curtis at botley as a mechanic then took over as landlord the three horse shoes at Appleton which is now a private house. Bill died several years ago.

An Oxfordshire transport connection on the Isle Of Wight Railway; Hunslet Austerity tank engine “Waggoner” ex Bicester Military Railway. Sister ex Bicester loco “Royal Engineer” is also here, although undergoing boiler repairs. One of the last Bicester steam locos (I remember seeing it at Bicester) “Sapper” was also working on the IOW until fairly recently.

Hello, I remember John Beasley, he had a Guy sleeper cab with a RR engine. I believe he lived in Ardley near Bicester. I was at school with his sons.

Hi Stuarto, your right John did have a Big J on Dines and the last time I saw him was on Timbmet about 10 years ago which is why I’m asking if anyone knows if he is still around.

Hi Chazzer, I remember John, he went on Savins after he left Dines, I am in touch with someone who may know, I’ll get back to you, Cliff.

Just Spoke to Ken Chapman, who I believe you know and he doesn’t know where he is either.
Ken is asking if the Seddon you put up was ■■■ 876J?

JAKEY:
Nice Commer dieseldog66, did you ride in your dads wagon ?

Only just seen this reply , so Jakey , yes I rode with my Dad all the time.

Hi stuarto, welcome to the thread & thanks for your input. It’s great when the thread gets a new burst every now & then, shows there’s still stuff to be revealed on the old Oxford firms, keep posting my man.

Nathan, looks like you been over here then! should have give us a shout, could have met up for a pint. I see you’re giving the lad a good grounding then, vintage lorry shows & steam railways, good stuff. Thanks for the info, not sure if the engines are just on loan, they seem to shuffle them about a bit. I was down there a few weeks back & looks like they are spending a few bob on improvements. They could do with putting a few more miles of track back, but it’s not easy, I know. Might be all the railway we have soon though, if reports are correct!

I read something down there George about the Island Line losing money, apparently powers that be want the steam railway to take it over. I can see them going to Ryde St Johns but would they ever have the cash to re-lower Ryde tunnel, just to get to that grotty pier?
Going the other way from Wooton towards Whippingham wouldn’t be a bad thing, with Osborne House nearby but apparently the ground isn’t stable.
