Old Firms in Oxford Area

Would you like to admit to the World Wide Web just how such an experienced tipper driver managed to wreck the ram?

Wear and tear M’lud. The ram sleeves etc were still in good condition, it was the cast iron ring/valve thing in the top was worn. The cap had been missing for a while, didn’t do it any favours I suppose. Working all ok now anyway, just wish stuff wouldn’t stick in the bloody body so much…

Where were Hartwell Oils based? I seem a remember an oil depot somewhere off Botley/Lamarsh Road?

An ex Earthline lorry, parked at Earthline, Shipton Quarry. I think Lockharts’ livery suits it.

Your probably right there as wasn’t it formerly Mobile /Home Counties petroleum ? Chris (ADR) would know I’m sure .

Gill Mill plant awaiting the demolition gang. The recycling plant’s being used to wash aggregate while a new plant replaces this one. This one must’ve done a few million tonnes in 25 years.

Great pictures there JAKEY & interesting text! I was on for Hartwells, on those same sort of wagons in the bad winter of '62/'63 & again the following winter. I remember a chap on there then that everyone called “Smithy”, very jovial sort. No one spent too much time in the depot together, by nature of the job, but I remember him telling a scots lad, who had come from BRS, that he had a brother on for BRS at that time, and by all accounts he was a colourful character! I only knew this chap as “Smithy” but it could well have been Les. He was a full time driver, employed all year round, but they had winter only staff, which is what I was. There were a few that alternated from South Midland coaches, summer to Hartwells winter each year. Other names I remember were Roy the Transport Manager, an old hand driver named Arthur Pinchin, think he left unexpectedly to run a mushroom farm in Cornwall or Devon. Couple of drivers Lofty Ley or Lay, pronounced as the latter, he was on petrol from Shell depot Thame & another was, I think Ken Toomey. It was a long time ago though, oh yes and one of the yard men was Danny ■■
Muckaway, I can’t recall the name of the lane it was down now, but it was somewhere along there. I don’t think there were any houses about, quite out in the sticks back then, although there were a few warehouse/factory places around about, but I don’t know any names! I think Toshboy might be thinking of the oil depot round by the Oxpens opposite the Cattle Market, unless they were down Osney first.

I’ve looked back on this and find that the fuel depot in Lamarsh lane was of Mobile .the pic shows the AEC of my former running mate at Ameys John Farmer R.I.P ,a then driver for Mobil .also another pic I will not post without permission , of Charlie Emsden R.I.P.the Father of Chris (adr) with his Bedford loading at Lamarsh, Charlie was also a former driver at BRS Oxford with me .

Jakey…Great picture of the H & M Big J with Brockhouse trailer, does he have anymore?

Hi Dieseldog66 , no at the moment that’s it , but Terry says there are more , was you on HM ?

That was a good bit after I was on for them, but I remember seeing the wagons through the fence, from the by–pass, top of Rose hill. That was when I had moved to the West Midlands & was running down to Cowley works fairly often. Not exactly sure what year that would have been though, anyone know!

Would that be the oil tanks, that were visible as you passed Sainsburys?
I’ve got a book on the Thame Branchline, it says that freight for Littlemore station included coal, oil, sand and general stuff for the loony bin.

I don’t think you would be able to see Hartwell oils yard from the bypass , its down railway lane on the right ,I am sure its still there but boarded up , they have been gone from there a long time now .

I go down there and have a look and take a picture .
