Hi all just found out that George Cannon passed away in march, can remember he used to run me ragged when i was in the yard he would catch you for a hand on the hay cart, disappear when it came to unload then reappear just as you finished unloading on your own & start all over again happy days RIP George
I was talking to one of Tuckwells mixer drivers on a DCPC course today; He said Tuckwells have taken over J.Curtis. Tuckwells have started quarrying at Oday Hill, meaning they don’t need to rely on imported aggregates. Driver hasn’t worked for them for long, but couldn’t fault them at all.

Hi Andrew, blimey mate how old was George? He was rattling on when we were on there & that was over 20 yrs ago . You say about the hay-cart, either he or Phil “Bungalow” were always grabbing you for some little job weren’t they
, the times I came in late morning to go down to South Wales with a bulker to bring a load of Coal back to the Power Station on the late shift, & Phil would say he had a little job he wanted doing first, 5 mins later you would find yourself cutting his lawn or something
, then he’d give you a box full of his Pigeons to take down to Wales & release while you loaded down there
. 1 thing for sure, you were never gona beat the bloody things back at 38 tons with a FL7 were we
fuel consumption my back-side! Regards Chris

Yes mate, aren’t they still going in Stuart Milnes’ colours?
Hi i worked for macburnie,s used to do germany& italy from them , when i started with i had a 143 then move on to volvo which was T reg then on to a daf 480 a lot of the other dafs were 530s. Also worked on the milne contract for them, they no longer have that contract , Gavin now has a daf 8 wheeler with a crane, worked with some good lads there , nick walker , des , billy, colin, martin to name a few, nick now drives for cotswold carriers.
Do you mean “MacHowie Transport”? Usually parks in the yard where RH Travel were (until they went pop)? Talking of RH, it was asked a few times around Witney if RH stood for “Really Horrible.” Their vehicles weren’t in the prime of life and often when the local traffic news reported on a broken down bus it was a safe bet it was one of theirs.
ye m8 didn’t do much for them as I moved to spain to work for reefer company while was there had 1 of those 530 lhd super space lovely truck got some pics somewhere
Macburnie is now machowie i think they change names when they got the milne contract, there was a firm from scotland called Howie which did the milne work up there i think they joined up some how . If u tap in machowie there site will come up.
tks m8
I did a bit for Gavin & Dougall here & there. Good blokes to work for, you didn’t have to hang around, but you didn’t need to kill yourself either! Here’s some pics of a couple they gave me to play with, posted these pics before on here I think, but you can never get enough of looking at wagons as smart as Macburnie’ . Good mate of mine on there was Martin Griffin, been on a couple of firms with him including H.S. Frederics, Nijmegen, 1 of the best drivers you will find is Griff’. Regards Chris
hi nice pics m8 I was on hsf for while myself with m8 mine kev from Bristol done it thru the agent in Bedworth think they still things for them moving back to uk next month been here in Canada 9yrs will dig out few pics put em up
I always thought of Macburnies’ as being Witneys’ answer to Peter Roff. On the subject of Witney firms, the Ducklington Vintage Rally is on next weekend, next to the Aston turn.
Here you go Chris adr, I knew you drove at least two of these Roadtrains for Oxford Brs , 172 AND 171.
