Old Firms in Oxford Area

A bit old these pics, but the wagons may be of interest to some, they are of my Dad during World War 2.

Bit clearer this one.

Last 1, for those of you who are into that sort of thing, Dad was in the 42nd Armoured Division, their badge/symbol was “The ever open eye”, attached to the 6th Gaurds Armoured Brigade. Dad is the one on the left of the pic.

Who remembers this fine grocer and where they were, I can still smell the fresh ground coffee and the spices as I walked past, tho’ this wagon is a bit before my time…and no googling.

Just to rewind a bit, ( sorry, been busy!) I well remember Grimbley Hughes and had a short spell, (when about 12) helping out on a van that a chap on our road drove for them in the early '50s. They had 3 or 4 of the long bonnet Bedford vans, (don’t know what model they were,) delivering groceries to the “poshies” in and around Oxford. The van drivers used to meet up at the Fox pub, at Boars Hill, on Saturday lunch time, leaving us lads outside while they had an hour on the beer before returning to load again!
I remember a very narrow alley to the loading bay at the back of the shop, but can’t remember how or where it was accessed from. I’ll probably recall a few more memories as the old grey matter ticks over.

You men of Oxfordshire, where is this and what was its use  .

Does anyone remember a firm from Princes Risborough who were based on the way out of PR on the Aylesbury road called Crockets who picked up milk from farms and took it to a dairy near the White City in London, first in churns back in the 50’s and 60’s then later in tankers. I used to sometimes go with one of their drivers Joe when I was 10 or 12 in the 60’s on a sunday and he would pick me up from a farm close to me when he made his collection, finish off his round and deliver to London, collecting a load of empty churns for the next day. They ran Bedford 4 wheelers, what model I have no idea but it was my first introduction to life on the road although I don’t think the firm is still going today.

There’s some old victorian looking red brick buildings near the raiilway bridge; Could that’ve been an old dairy?

Hi Oil reader its a brick kiln , I think there was more than one in Nettlebed at one time , now only one .It can be seen from the main road , next to the village green going towards Henley . :sunglasses:

I may be wrong :open_mouth: , is it at wheatley , it was where they put criminals in , years ago .

It is. pigpen gave the answer, there are at least another two(Ithink) in Oxfordshire still preserved, Wheatley one is unusual in its conical shape. It was the local jug, gaol, clink, where lawbreakers were held until taken to Oxford to go before the beak, or put in the stocks on the village green for shaming and also for the locals to apply (chuck) their DIY treatment, much better than ASBOs.

For those in the Witney area, the Witney Feast funfair has started moving in and there are some nice ERF and Fodens. Hebborns are there with a V and C reg pulling the waltzer and I saw a nice Fleetmaster with 265 Rolls leaving with an empty stepframe trailer. Sadly I couldn’t take a pic on my phone as Daddy was pushing Callum on the swings, but the Foden sounded lovely. :sunglasses:

Took these pics today, amazing whats hidden away!

You must have had a great day Chris, :sunglasses: If that is a wartime Bedford in the first picture it looks in fine fettle for it’s age & one of the TK’s looks ready to roll. (well almost)

bloody hell Chris , what a fine , howq many have you bought ? :open_mouth:
