I worked for W. Swan early 80’s Day cab ERF’s. Good old day’s Going south of Manchester 7am start anywhere else 6am start. Bonus pay 27mph.

You’ve travelled a long way from Wm Swan to Kazakhstan. Wm Swan belonged to Morrisons a fine shipping company but went down hill after they sold it to Unwin.

This is an Ex Dobsons Tipper, Which was sold to Gillon Bros Ltd Lime Spreaders Co,The my cousin bought it , changed the tipper body & ran it out of Moot Law Quarry, (Now Closed) Then it was sold to a lad called Frank Steel from Sreetgate Sunnyside, It had a 150.Gardner Engine & a 6 speed David Brown Box, A bit high geared for tipper work, But did well in its day, Regards Larry.

One here part of the Tayforth group.

Dobson of Edinburgh became Exel DHL after Tankfreight. Or at least they did as far as the Tate & Lyle contract in Greenwich was concerned

Pollock of Musselburgh had a nice fleet,Scotrans now I believe.
I remember Dobsons in BP Grangemouth (or Forth Chemicals as it was known then). Dalkeith Transport was another - or is Dalkeith too far out.
Chancelot Mill of “Lofty Peak” flour fame in Leith.Glass Glover Distribution had a depot at Newbridge when they had the Littlewoods contract.
There are stacks more, especially if you cast the net a bit further out.

Wm Swan had a couple of depots in Leith but I forget where can someone remind me.

Chris Webb:
Chancelot Mill of “Lofty Peak” flour fame in Leith.

Gone now Chris - the mill is flattened and is just wasteground on the dockside , a similar end to that of another ABF mill in Scotland - Snodgrass’s in Glasgow.

There are some well-publicised pictures of the AEC Mammoth Minors which used to run in tandem from Leith down to the big bakery at Gateshead - they then came down to Seaforth in 1972 as in-fill tractors until the fleet of ERF A-Series arrived from Sandbach. so popular were they with the drivers that they were kept on as wheat wagons, occasionally filling-in on flour on the day shift. Wilf Whittle was famed for breezing past ERFs on the way down to Bradfords at West Brom in his - pipe on the go, cap over to one side at a steady 68-70mph…

Leith trialled the the Alli-Bulk motors which eventually came own from there to Ainscoughs at Burscough. Keith (Funky Monkey) Gibbons ran the first one which was a SA-200 converted from a bag wagon - his first motor after promotion from 2nd man with Dave Walsh.

Seaforth had a couple of Leith B-Series briefly, but I believe they went back north as they weren’t up to the standard of the then workshop manager Mr Forshaw as they had ■■■■■■■ 250s in them.

Thanks for that Marky,I didn’t realise Chancelot Mill was no more.
I remember 'em well heading south to Gateshead when I was on nights on our Morpeth changeover. There are some pics of their Mammoth Minors in the AEC book I have.A.E.Evans had an ex Tank Ferry Trailers (Thomas Allen) Mammoth Minor on an “H” plate IIRC and that would trap on a bit.
