I remember Bunchie from Comart,I was on Beresfords.I remember Ray Gold too,if it all went off you really wanted him on your side.I also remember Ron who worked around Stoke at that time.He was a giant of a man,he never passed a broken down Brit.(Goldie didn’t either)Phil Coomber was another good guy, sadly passed away young.I also remember Dave, another giant,he got the first B reg Man that Beresford bought.I think Jack Kelly had the lone 111 Scania on the fleet.I had about a year on Beresfords,Arthur Beresford didn’t think highly of me and my card was marked.I had a short spell on BET out of Scholar green and then spent the next 15yrs on Rh Freight in Nottingham. The last international work I did was about 2003 for Sewell out of leeds.Ron Fowler

Hiya relluf…your man Dave on the MAN at Beresfords is Dave Scarlet …he been mentioned a few times on this site
he’s working at ANC/FedEx. he was on a night trunk. but have found out a few days ago he’s running vehicals into the
MOT test staition…
John

Hi John, thanks for the info,he’s a great guy,got pics of his wagon at Macon bath on Mick Simpsons birthday,we’d parked up on the way to Italy cos of Kermit bank holiday,I’ll post them soon.

Hi all, here are some pics from my S-O-T days.I haven’t got software to crop them so here’s hoping.

Hi all, just a few more pics.I’ve got an album full that I can’t find. When I do find it I’ll post loads more.In these pics are my Sed Atki and the Erf which I swapped with Jimmy Stubbs. The Seddon was in Barcelona and the Erf was halfway up Cerdon. The two girls were hitching to Italy, they’ve probably got grandkids of their own by now.The Seddon had an a**e about face gearbox, horrid.

This was the beginning of the end for me at Beresfords. It had been -26 degrees all week and the wheel nuts kept slacking off.I tightened them again at the fuel station just before Zeebrugge but then got diverted to Ostend for the boat.Midway between the the two ports,my wheels overtook me.I flashed them in but they kept on going.I got the sack.Jack Kelly(bless his good heart) got a letter from the fuel station owner stating that I had checked the nuts,to exonerate me.I had got a start at BET by then and stayed there for about 6 months then moved to Nottingham. Also in one pic is Kenny Green and me,I think we were in Luxembourg.I seem to recall Jack taking a young kid with him on a trip, might have been Rob.I remember the kid being in the yard.If you were taking someone you had to pick them up away from the yard.We weren’t allowed passengers or hitchikers.

Hi all, halfway up the Italian side of the blanc, halfway up Cerdon and two pics in Udine.Contrary to rumours I did finish quite a few trips.

This one was taken at Macon baths. It was Simpos birthday.Dave Scarlett had the W reg Erf before he got the Man,I still had the bloody Seddon.I can’t remember who the other Daf driver was.It may have been Stan Dukes. We walked down to the supermarket in Macon and got a s**tload of alcohol so whoever else was there may not remember it either.Dave and his yellow headlamps, said the French old bill left him alone at night,Hmmm.

Here’s a pic of Rod Johnson, can’t remember where I took it,might have been the Autoporto Aosta. The wagon and drag might have been Shirley’s yard at Cellarhead, can’t really remember where I took it.Just look at the fuel prices £1.84 a gallon!!!
pics3.jpg

Carman’s ERF in Holland I think. The Sed Atki in Barcelona and Aosta,Erf in Udine.

Weekended near Carcasonne on route to Barcelona.Yes we really did get paid for this!! This was the second time there. The first time was in the Seddon, none of the Kermits could figure out what it was.Mind you,I did see an Atki Borderer enroute from Orte to Perugia.

This is the 2nd to last motor I had on Rh freight before I left.I loved it.Iwas very lucky to work with some great people on Beresfords and RH freight.More people walked thro this than walked thro

M’cr airpot terminal.

Funny thing after all this talk of Stoke firms.Look what was in last nights “Sentinel”

Jim Stubbs used to work for Berrisfords, and now he works for Fedex/ANC same as myself.
This do is open to wives as well,Jim would like to know by the weekend if anyone wishes to attend,as he has to confirm the numbers to get the size of room he requires.
I asked Jim if we had to turn up in our working gear,ie,leather waistcoats and clogs with your wallet on a chain,to help us recognise one another after all these years.
I said as I was mainly M/E,could I turn up in cut down jeans, flip flops and sunglasses.
Hope to see some of you there.

Hello Jim,I last saw you on the Portsmouth-Santander?? ferry about 12 years ago.I was with my missus nad my dad on a cruise I remember you and Geoff from Stobarts feeding my dad on the way down because the food was nutcase expensive.Cheers to you and your family.

Hi reliuf,
I am not Jim Stubbs.
I know Jim Stubbs as he worked on ANC/FedEx like I do,and I put this item from the local paper up here as Jim is not on the air.
He organised that reunion a couple of years ago and we had another last year.
Jim has now retired and I don’t see him around, however his son Phil still drives for FedEx,he’s on the internet, but not on this site, although he may be a lurker.

great pic,s relluf  thanks for sharing them with us.

Hi all i know this isn’t that long ago but still nearly 20 years, does anybody remember PJM Transport on Mossfield Road or Keith Bolton, Billy Beech or Keith Boon aka K&M Distribution. Thanks

Yep I remember PJM very smart metallic green VOLVO units.

Hiya Relluf
Cracking pictures thanks for sharing them and any more you may have . The ‘kid’ (I was 22. at the time !! lol ) you remember with Jack Kelly and around the yard was me , that was in '83.I wrote to Mr Beresford and he invited me up and showed me round then I got talking to Jack and ended up doing 4 trips away. They were great times, then Alan Heathcote was in the office with I think Geoff Ellis ■■. I speak to John Heath a fair bit who has loads of stuff on Beresfords like myself but sadly lost contact with Jack years ago who was a great character . Would be glad to hear of any more stories and pics you may have . Was your name on the weekend runners list I posted earlier on this thread ?

Hi Rob,were you really 22?You looked younger.Yeah Jack was a magic guy,I lost touch with him after Beresfords. He would probably be in his late seventies or eighties now I would think.I was 28 back in 83 and Jack was close to retirement,he and Mambo were about the same age.I haven’t driven a truck for about 4yrs,got a forklift licence, but I might go back on the road, all the nostalgia on here teering my eyes up.I wasn’t on that list I think I went out on the Thursday to Le Havre with Jimmy Stubbs.

Hiya Relluf
Had a look through my albums to see if I could find any of your trucks. I could only find one of each, the Sed Atki parked in the yard and still in the old Beresford colours and although a bit far away the trio of trucks was taken at Toddington on a Sunday lunchtime with the middle ERF being yours LRE 622V with the Roller badge top of the rad. The last picture of the 2800 I thought you might know after reading about your pal and his yellow headlamps haha . Was this his latest truck after the Erf ■■ as I don’t remember seeing any others with yellow lamps up there. As you say its very nostalgic (and very addictive) reading all the stories on hear more so for all you drivers as you’ve been there and done it and must bring back so many memories . I only lived a bus ride from Blackwall tunnel so many a Sunday afternoon was spent watching all the regular continental firms coming down from the Midlands/North and thats when it all started really. Jack would pick me up on a Sunday afternoon or Monday night at the tunnel when we went away . Keep in touch mate and I’ll try and get some more pics on here.

Hi Rob,yes they’re my two old girls.I loved the ERF it had a bullet fast fuller box.The Sed Atki had the same box but you had to wait for the 8 pot Gardner revs to come right down before it would let you drop a cog,so going up the blanc you’d end up dropping two.I took the daf (263Y) to Italy once.It belonged to a guy who lost his licence for DD coming out of Dover of a morning, can’t remember his name but For the grace of God could have been any of us.I think Stan Dukes got it after.I drove most of those 2800s and none of them were worth a w**k.They all had an 8speed box without the splitter, rubbish.Dave Scarlett had one of the 290 RR Erfs, then he got B370MRE a MAN 321.That battered everything on the hills.I think he still had that when Beresfords closed.Jack’s Scania was Irish spec and had a 305hp instead of the UK 275hp.The 300hp Gardners went well.Rod Johnson had one and a lad called Mick whose Dad was something to do with the management at Beresford.I may be wrong but I think his dad left and set up another Stoke firm. There must have been 10-15 top international firms running out of Stoke in those days.Great memories.

that pic of the Daf was in the wash area.I remember coming in the yard late one Friday night not long after I started,I dropped the trailor on the park and parked the unit up in the yard and went home.0730 Saturday morning Arthur Beresford rang me and asked if I was coming in to wash my unit.I can’t print my answer on here. When I told the other drivers there was a sharp intake of breath.Arthurs eye was on me.Nonetheless the time I had there was great and a good grounding for the next 30 years.
