Rose Cottage Digs in Kendal was a good place to stay, It was on the main A6 as you came into Kendal on the left hand side North Bound, I used it quite often in the 60/70s era, Regards Larry.

Where about’s did you park up when you stayed there Larry ? Cheers Dennis.

On the river side & it was free in those good old days Dennis, Mind you , I used to try & get parked up earley as the spaces soon filled up, Regards Larry.

You must have enjoyed a riverside walk back to the digs then Larry, did you ever stay at Clara’s right by the river on New Road when you parked up?Plus you were close to all the boozers there.? Cheers Dennis.

Well spoken that Man !!! But do you think things are now “a stirring” I know UKIP in England and the SNP in Scotland get some stick and distain from the Con/Lib/Lab establishment but those ■■■■■■■ are due a great big ■■■■■■■ lesson via the ballot box from the silent majority who have remained silent for too long! I say we should exit the EU and close our borders for a while until we get back to normality and return things to as they were always meant be. Cheers Bewick.

No Dennis I only used the Rose Cottage, Which was run by a Mrs Carradus, Plus I didn’t drink very much in those days, I never had time as I was allways on the move, Unless I was hanging about London waiting for a back load I used to have a few drinks with my mates, But not a lot, But as you know I do enjoy my Malts & Red Wines now, Happy days, Regards Larry.

I notice a card from the West End Café in Gloucester, Larry. Good grief, you certainly lived the high life when you were on the road! :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

He certainly did. Like a stable block with a cold wind machine at the end. :imp:

I stopped there one night on my way from London to Cardiff and a mate who loaded an hour after me, from and for the same places, cabbed it and arrived bright and shiny and shocked to see the haggard look I had. :unamused: :frowning:

Did anybody stay at the guest house in Gloucester, on Cromwell Street? Ran by a builder called Fred, rumour was his wife batted for both teams? They had a lot of undesirable tenants, the robbing gits would vanish in the night without paying. Still that couple must’ve made a few bob, they were always having their garden redesigned.

All the talk of Kendal got me rummaging through the old addresses but couldn’t find it. I used to stay in a place in Kendal, coming south you turned off to the left and the place backed to the river. I stayed one night and the place was chock a block (maybe Shap was shut). The old lady had people everywhere, mattresses on the front room floor. Two fellers came in late and she put mattresses on the two half landings on the stairs. Two old ladies in cottages further down helped her out with breakfast in the morning. All for as far as remember 12/6

It will have been “Clara’s” or Mrs.Ediss’s on New Road near the car/lorry park on the riverside.Cheers Bewick.

I don’t think that there was one opposite Atkin’s, but a bit further along to the west there was one called The Airport.
Is that the one you’re thinking of?

Cheers Spardo, I’m sure you are right it was the Airport, but I did think it was somewhere near Atkins, there is a long abandoned site roughly opposite what used to be Atkins and I thought that was it. Regards, Mizzo.

I remember the Bellgrove Hotel in the Gallowgate almost opposite the Barrowlands. Down and outs on the first floor, building workers on the second floor, lorry drivers on the top floor. canteen in the basement (first place I tasted mutton pies). Across the road to the Barrowlands bar, hundreds of pints already pulled and lined up for the one hour’s drinking (1956/7). Top of the road the National Restaurant where furniture drivers could get a casual porter.
