Now Tony. That algebra came in handy when you were working out your expenses. Because I didn’t have any schooling I just added a zero to all my receipts. Not too good with the lira but great with the deutch mark! Regards Charlie

Although it has probably been mentioned on here already, (I’m too bone idle to go through 89 pages) what was the name of the café on the A38 at Findern opposite what used to be Atkins? It was always our first stop when going South West in the 70’s, I’ve passed the sight a lot in the last few months and the name will not come to me. Regards, Mizzo.

I don’t think that there was one opposite Atkin’s, but a bit further along to the west there was one called The Airport.
Is that the one you’re thinking of?

mappo:
Here,s another one, and a couple of old parking receipts.

That tooley st ticket brings back some memorys of the 70s
Park up,go across the rd to wash in the toilets, eat in the italien restaurant down stairs next to doss house, drink in the copper, anchor inn, kings head,to name a few.Regular lads parked there, berrisfords stoke, marshalls eavsham, snaylams Bolton, happy days.
regards dave.

I was having a bit of a clear out and found this.

I like the “Paid with Thanks” stamp, always made me smile because what they ment was RECEIVED with thanks, no one was ever thankful for paying.

Who did you drive for in them days mappo?
regards dave

Hi Dave, I was tramping for Smith of Maddiston out of Southampton depot.
In those days we sometimes took our units home at weekends if we were,nt working.
I drove several different motors for them.
Here,s a Big J parked next to my Zephyr…wish I still had it today.

Can’t see an engine manufacturer’s badge on the front of that Big J, mappo. Would you like to enlighten us? Just to keep him from ■■■■■■■ happy, of course.

All this talk of Morley’s made me think of a bit further north. Just coming into Retford, on the left was The Guest House, phone Retford 91. Run by an ex W O driver from the ATS. She never quite realised she had left the army. Last time I saw it it was a saddlers and tack shop. Anyone remember her?

Bob

Hi rof, don’t really wanna get involved with this long running saga, but as I,m sure I wrote
ages ago on the SOM thread, I,m certain that Smiths had some Big J,s with the 240,s in.
BUT I,ve got no proof…so I guess it,ll run and run until someone comes up with that elusive photo…

Thanks for the info mappo,i just thought you might have been one of my old mates from yrs ago.I used to be on regular londons twice a week in the 70s so maybe our paths did cross at sometime.
regards dave.

Hi Dave, our paths may well have crossed mate…who knows ■■?
To be honest though we didn,t do much London work at Smiths, it was mainly Northern
and Scottish traffic…happy days…Tony.

I bet you wish that Dagenham Disaster had a gardener in it. lol. :unamused:

Not exactly old cafes, but old guest houses ( digs )
Not the Blackbrook haulage one obviously, but they were scanned together.
Anyone remember any of these then ■■?

Hello Mappo, Mrs O’Shea, Drum Lea, Kendal, that’s a blast from the past, home from home with out a doubt.

Rose Cottage Digs in Kendal was a good place to stay, It was on the main A6 as you came into Kendal on the left hand side North Bound, I used it quite often in the 60/70s era, Regards Larry.
