Sad news. Mac’s later Max of the famous teapot on the A4 at Beenham has gone. Tenancy terminated and site sold to developers. Demolition started. At least the hole in the car park will get filled
Yet another one gone.

Aye its sad to see these old watering holes bite the dust, We all relied on them for a very long time but now drivers have all sorts of gear in their sleeper cabs, EG Micros, Fridges, Laptops & lots more I suppose, But that’s progress, Im glad to be retired from the haulage game, Mind you I loved every minute I was involved with it going back to the 50s, How things have changed Eh, Happy long gone forever days & nights, Regards Larry.
In my opinion it was a lot better job in those days, Larry, even though we froze in the winter, baked in the summer & bounced up & down all day in those luxury cabs!
I make you absolutely right on that. Plus we never had 30 million cars mostly driven by suicides.

Hiya,
And have we all got dodgy knees, bad backs and are as deaf as a post but
between the time taken stuffing myself with painkillers, I remember the
great times I had as a lorry driver and wouldn’t change a thing.
thanks harry, long retired.

It’s been very quiet there for a long time, I did stop there a few months ago and was the only one in there. I must say the food was good and the price was ok.
The last time I was in there was before the M4 was open. That says a lot for the reason we haven’t got proper cafes any more.

God was only a boy then
Hiya,
Back to the Quernow for a minute, it has been going downhill for years even well
before it was bypassed the standards had slipped to below acceptable had they
offered good service when still on the main drag they would still have a customer
base they’re not far from the new road and easily accessed, if they’d tried harder
to satisfy their customers they would have had a good overnight clientele drivers
finding a nice quiet place to stop are like gold nowadays, the last time I called in
just as a motorist the food was awful and they didn’t seem to care if you there or
not, they had their chance and blew it, it won’t be missed.
thanks harry, long retired.

ROF but the elf an safety worked as you did not fall asleep behind the wheel mind you I recall a few of the mates and drivers at Pickfords could drop off in the passenger seat of the old scammells how they did it I don’t know
cheers Johnnie
Oh dear, Johnnie, that prompts a confession that I actually “dropped off” when driving along the first part of the M4 to be opened. I woke up when the offside wheels dropped into the gravel-filled drainage channel that ran up the central reservation- no barriers in those days!
I managed to get my act together quickly enough to plant my right foot on the throttle and heave the steering to the left, thankfully it worked and I spent the next half hour on the hard shoulder tightening the ropes.
Yet another clanger I just about got away with while learning my trade!

ROF My friend you were not alone, Speaking for myself I had a few scary moments in my younger days, Driving old wagons with ■■■■ poor brakes, I think this is where the white knuckle saying originated from, Going over Standedge & Shap in the 50s is something I will never forget, But I loved every minute of it, Regards Larry.

I think it was the Busy Bee
Never used it but vaguely remember it.
You could clearly see it from the southbound.

It was called the Sunset. Two things stick in my mind about it The nipper who parked you up and chalked your start time on your front offside tyre. And the great breakfast of egg bacon and kidney. Used to taste that all day! Regards Charlie
I parked at the Sunset most nights of the week, my house is across the road
