Old Cafe's

Never stopped in Preston- too close to home (Gloucester) for a night out!!!

Retired Old ■■■■:
The Castle Cafe at Raglan. Used to be a compulsory breakfast stop before it was bypassed by the dual carriageway between Monmouth and Abergavenny/Newport. It was run by a guy with only one hand and it was one of the best old-fashioned cafes in the area.
Almost as good was The Bungalow at Symonds Yat but it got a bit overcrowded at times.
Then there was the cafe (don’t know the name) on the right hand side heading out of Newport on the Cardiff Road
And unless I’ve missed it in a previous post, The Windrush on the A40 was first stop of the day heading East.

Hello Retired Old ■■■■, The Windrush has been mentioned a couple of times on here (it’s still one of my favourites  )
I bet that there were at least a dozen good transport cafes on the A40 between Gloucester and High Wycombe in the sixties, two more favourites were the one at Golden Valley, between Gloucester and Cheltenham and the one at Northleach where it crosses The Fossway, I think it became a Little Chief or a Little Thief as we used to call them.

Regards Steve.

Hi, Steve,
Yes, we were spoilt for choice in those days. At that time we never had any inkling that things would change so much or so rapidly. I suppose we assumed that, since we had got over the war, things would just plod on like they were at the time.
Nostalgia’s a thing of the past, I reckon.

This is the remains of the transport cafe just north from Raglan on the A40, right hand side. The remains of two vending machines are on the left. The drum looks as though it is on what was a pump island in front the cafe. The main park was at the rear and somebody was living in an old single deck bus in the adjacent wood.

Cheers Phil.

WOW! That certainly makes me feel old! It didn’t look like that the last time I was there! If any of our local drivers were coming back from South Wales after about three o’clock in the afternoon they would all call in at the cafe in case someone wanted a lift home on a dodgy.

Use the search facilty on here Retired Old ■■■■, search Windrush cafe I put some links to it on here last year. It’s been up for sale for over a year with planning for a new services.
I’ve mentioned it before, but the San Remo at Eynsham near the Evenlode pub?
A more recent one, “Normans” in the Westbound A40 layby at Eynsham? Used to be very popular with Smiths Bletchington and Chris Hayter drivers.

Has anyone visited the Highwayman near Aston Down airfield on the A417? It was The Glider until recently, very mixed opinions apparently??

It’s a portacabin type cafe, Dave. Towards Stroud from Cirencester, near Minchinhampton turn near the airfield. There’s a pub called the Highwayman on the A419 between Cirencester and Birdlip. Nice laybys along there

Think the cafe he mentioned is on the A419.?
The Highwayman pub on the A417 shut years ago, when the Cirencester by pass was being built.

The one with the Stagecoach in the carpark ? I used to pass it over 40 years ago in the lorry a couple of times a week, can’t remember what it was called then.
For 400 years The Highwayman Inn has served the passing trade going north out of Cirencester on the old Ermin Way towards Gloucester.

As long ago as the 16th century it was a highly respected coaching inn - a fact echoed by the marvellous carriage in the car park. Ironically, the pub now finds itself removed from the main road. Built to bypass Cirencester, it also bypasses The Highwayman
Cheers Dave.

Is the Centurian the one that has a van sales place next to it, near Hansons pit at Daglingworth?
