Well Harry inside this cafe called Tims there was notices on the walls regarding the noise at night, Rankins Trunkers used to stop there, plus Baxters, Orrell & Brewsters, J.R.Adams, this was relating to drivers closing the cab doors & asked them to do it as quietley as possible, I never heard any complaints during that period, but something must have been said, at sometime or another hence the notices displayed on the wall, Regards Larry.

Could it be Tims at Dewsbury, He used to open at night also, Regards Larry.
Tims■■? who or where was Tims, I’ve lived in Dewsbury all my life and I can’t recall “Tims”
Of course, after saying that somebody is going to stir the grey matter up and waken the memory cells.

Does anybody recognise the transport cafe beyond the MkV tanker (Harold Wood?). The sign seems to read LX Transport Cafe. The negative dates from the 1960s so it is a long way back.
hiya,
Never been in this one, just wonder what the neighbours
thought when the place got busy and a guy with a cold 150
starts to build the air up outside their front door, now who
said spoilsport, my missus would have done a Norah Batty on
him and chased him with the brush.
thanks harry, long retired.
In the middle of the night. Oh joy.

Your team must have taken over the contract from us (Hargreaves Fuel oil), I’ve run many a load of gas oil into Blackburn Meadows under the Tinsley Viaduct. It was quite scary seeing the support legs of the viaduct moving up and down slightly with the constant overhead traffic.

hiya,
Although it was Bayford Fuels I was working for. I was was carrying
nothing more dangerous than “polished water” from another power
station because the source of supply had dried up at Tinsley and I
and another driver had to bring 4x20 ton loads per shift into there
so they could flush the boiler tubes seemingly “tap water” had far
too many impurities in the shape of metals in it to do the job so it
had to be brought in from another now defunct power station, now
that was a cracking job with just a chance on the odd occasion I
might have to change trailers and nip away for a load of “cherry” to
take back to the yard for transhipping on to the door to door motors.
thanks harry, long retired.

Hi trunker08
Yes remember Walters very well. Ock Street decorated outside with a black and white chequer design. Used to go in there quite a bit while on Amey’s low loaders/cranes. Many a sausage sandwhich and mug of tea listening to the jukebox. This was from 1965 on, before the by-pass (A34) when everything went through Abingdon either to Drayton heading South or Hinksey hill (Oxford) going North!! Those were the days.
Used to use the cafe in the old station carpark very occasionally.
Hi David Cox, i mated out of Southampton back in 1960 from school, all the cafe up the A34 ar gone, we use to stop at Bob’s at kidlington as well, my uncle used that one when it was called parrifin annies, i rememmber the tea spoon "chaind"to the counter!!! cheers, trunker08

Hey trunker you are stirring some memorys here.I worked for william nuttalls m/c early 70s and bobs used to be my first stop on the way to basingstoke after negotiateing warmington hill with 20 ton on the back of an old atki borderer with a 180gardner and d/b straight 6 gearbox.I remember cold mornings always good grub and a big fire in centre of floor, happy days eh.
regards dave.
Hi Dafdave
After Warmington hill you didn’t stop at the café (the name deserts me) on the right when leaving Banbury, South bound then. It changed to a Little chef for a while until it had a housing development built on it. Can’t recall Bob’s at Kidlington. I know what is now a car showroom was once a café, that’s to the South of the centre of Kidlington and then there were a few we used on the Bicester road (now the A34 approaching J9) near Weston on the green. There were two or three along there, all on lay-bys caused by straightening the Bicester road (there on called the Bicester straight).
David

Anyone remember the cafe just off j1 of the m50 on the old a38[still going i think].Family run for as long as i can remember 30+yrs by a man called brian and his wife and son.Excellent clean friendly cafe serving good food and excellent value for money. The cafe was nicknamed the pigeon fanciers by some due to brian being a big pigeon racer. Before i ret.i can remember the cafe being an old wooden shack across from were the present cafe stands[or stood].
Brian’s was a “twice-a-day” stop for us tipper drivers hauling roadstone from Redbrook, Monmouth to Tilcon’s coating plant near Pershore.
Fabulous grub and clean as a new pin.
Brian built the new cafe and his bungalow next door (including pidgeon loft!) with the insurance payout when the original wooden cafe burnt down.
Sadly closed now, like most of the others.
Anyone remember Gossington Bridge on the A38 between Gloucester and Bristol? Brewery made the owner an offer he couldn’t refuse and turned it into a changeover yard for it’s trunkers.
The Castle Cafe at Raglan. Used to be a compulsory breakfast stop before it was bypassed by the dual carriageway between Monmouth and Abergavenny/Newport. It was run by a guy with only one hand and it was one of the best old-fashioned cafes in the area.
Almost as good was The Bungalow at Symonds Yat but it got a bit overcrowded at times.
Then there was the cafe (don’t know the name) on the right hand side heading out of Newport on the Cardiff Road
And unless I’ve missed it in a previous post, The Windrush on the A40 was first stop of the day heading East.
