Hullo,
My mind at the moment has gone completely blank. What was that Cafe on the A1, somewhere near to Selby Fork ? The last time I was in there was about 12 years or more ago. It was on the southbound side, the Cafe was a White House with steps going up to the door, the door was at the side. then behind that, but beside the road, which ran alongside the A1 was a really large Parking Area, ( not too sure if there was’nt a Diesel pump at the bottom end ) The Parking Area was a sort of Sand and Flint mixture, and there was a bank up to the A1. Come in Chris or Malcolm, one of you must remember.
Cheers, Archie.
I know the one you mean Archie but, like you,it’s name escapes me.
So it’s over to Malc…
Could it have been the Hillcrest? Cheers Haddy.
Hullo,
That’s the problem, I can’t even remember exactly where it was now. or the Name of it. I obviously never used it very much as it was too near home. The last time I went there was as I said probably about 12 years ago, I had to meet another bloke there to transfer some Blue Pallets over. When we went over to the Cafe for a Cup of Tea, the Lady told us it was going to be pulled down the next week and that in a few months it would dissapear underneath the new A1(M), the bit between the A64 and Ferrybridge. Between 1996 and 1999 the M1 section north of the M62 underwent a major reconstruction and extension to take the M1 on a new route to the A1(M) at Aberford. The new road involved the construction of a series of new junctions, bridges and viaducts to the east of Leeds. When the new section of M1 was completed and opened on 4 February 1999, the Leeds South Eastern Motorway section of the M1 was redesignated as the M621 and the junctions were given new numbers (M621 junctions 4 to 7). I don’t mean the small Cafe right next door to the Filling Station and the Motel, it was somewhere else. BUT Where ?
Cheers, Archie.
Could it be the Waywest between Ferrybridge and wentbridge?

The best cafe down the A5 IMO was The Jet at Clifton-upon- Dunsmore, run by the Turton family. My second choice was The Avairy south of Hinkley Knight.Bewick.
Yes I remember it good food and clean, I was only in once, I was loading tiles at Shawell Redlands Tiles in the 60s. Regards Larry
Any of you old drivers remember The Busy Bee Cafe Watford a bit up market I thought, the last time I was in there was 1960, it was clean, & well named allways busy, Im sure there was a film about wagons, and some of the scenes were shot there ?. Regards Larry
From the film The Hi-jackers. Where was it and was this the real name anyone know?
Ray
I searched the film title but only came up with the info that it was supposed to be between Chester and London but, film companies often used locations nowhere near where they were meant to be. The only Lupin I know of, was on the A30 at Bagshot, which closed in 1973. There is a building behind, which may be the yard of E H Whittle, who owned the cafe.

I remember when I was a teenager driving down to Nottingham and Leicester with one of our small vans and once I had unloaded in Leicester I had all the time in the world to travel back, and I was starving as I hadn’t had time to stop earlier. It would probably be 1966 or 67
It was before the M1 was built and I was heading home from Leicester towards Nottingham and I stopped in a transport cafe on the left hand side of the road and I remember in the car park they had an old Primrose Bus from about the late thirties. It had curtains so either someone lived in it or was used to rent out for accomodation for Lorry drivers to sleep in. The reason I was surprised was that Primrose was from the north East and ran a service from Newcastle to Blackpool.
In any event I remember enjoying my mealwhich was cooked not either microwaved, nor was it just a fried burger. I realise I was so hungry I would have enjoyed anything but this place did an excellent meal. I wonder if anyone can remember as no doubt it will have been long gone. Isn’t it a shame that that the motorways have destroyed such places.
Any of old drivers remember the Beacon Cafe Bignels Corner South Mimms Big Time in its day boasted.75 beds ,never stayed there but the grub was ok. Regards Larry retired, well sort of.

cheers Johnnie

Hi Ted there was a cafe at the crossroads but it was the Flouch the Robin Hood was just below the Dog and Partridge on the left going to Manchester a few hundred yards up from the crossroads so your grey matter is still functioning correctly.

Eyup Ray,I’ve just had me tea but I’d find room for one of them, especially before tackling Woodhead in winter.
