Old Cafe's

I haven’t read all of this thread, but has anybody mentioned a long gone very fine cafe at the top of Standedge (A 62, before the M62 was built). Ma an Pa Johnson. The were two old folk who had no transport and they lived down the bottom in Greenfield. Every morning they would stand there for a few minutes and the first fella through loaded em up and took then up to the cafe. Always a free breakfast for him. Great cafe, great memories, happy days.

Hi Brian,a friend of mine wants to know the name of the cafe on the A62 Standedge Road on the left hand side westbound about a mile from Delph,it’s a hotel now apparantly.Have you or anybody else any idea? I never used Standedge much,Woodhead was my route (or off route  )from North West to North East, easier for a dodgy into Sheffield  .

i always stayed at silver links cafe, at kincardine bridge whenever i was around that area, i all remember having to
put your boots under the two bottom legs of the bed, before going to sleep,or when you got up the next morning
you found that some nice feller had kindly taken your good pair, and left you his old worn out pair,
great food, warm and clean, do,s any one know if it,s still there?

I used to stay there in the 90s,never slept there but the food was good.I used to park on the lane just past the cafe and go in the pub[cant remember the name].Due to retiring not been that way for 10yrs but i believe it has shut on talking to one of my mates.
regards dave.

Hi Sniffy,is that the one on the right towards the M6,the one that was run by ■■■■,an American? We used to call it t’Wooden Hut but Ray Fishflunk told me it was officialy known as the Moat Lane cafe. There’s a pic of it on here somewhere.
“Sizzle Sister” hmmmmmmmmm, well if they do a good fried spam sandwich like they did in the 60s and 70s then they won’t go far wrong.

Sammy I think the Motormans was further up.All I’ve found out is that the site is now occupied by the Saddleworth Hotel - courtesy of John Stanfield.

Was in there about 7 years ago, it was as rough as ever. Don’t know what the bedrooms were like, but the showers and the rest of the place was a s^^t hole.

I worked for Mothers Pride Bread 1962. We used to deliver bread and cakes to Motorman’s Cafe Marsden on the A62. We would deliver Sunday about 300 canteen loaves; this was for Lorry drivers stopping over Sunday night and breakfasts for early starters. David Brown tractors would be parked for about a mile down the hill at 4 am for the start of breakfasts. M62 to killed the trade for Motorman’s Cafe the day it was opened, about 1969.

I started work for Smiths of Eccles Urmston 1968; we used the A62 quite a lot. The food at Motorman’s was very good.

M62 to killed the trade for Motorman’s Cafe the day it was opened, about 1969.

Another Cafe was Snipe cafe between Droylsden and Ashton under line near Robinsons Jam factory.

Hi Dave
I have not travelled the A62 for about 35 years. I looked on google streets and Motormans is still there.

Anyone used “The Woodbridge” Cafe in Guildford? Went past it yesterday but nowhere to park, looks like an old fashioned type cafe. Used Micks’ cafe in Botley Road Oxford about 9 years ago (when a rookie). Apparently used to be the Locomotive crews mess when Oxford a loco depot.

I haven’t been in the Woodbridge cafe lately but it’s always had a good reputation-it does or did belong to an Italian chap called Johnny and he always served up big portions, you wouldn’t come out of there hungry.Parking is always a problem there for lorries ,but the cafe always looks busy when I go by.

Come off J20 M1 Head towards mkt harborough, just after walcote, there’s a big layby on the right. There used to be a 24hr cafe called Tubs cafe…
Been gone at least 10yrs, now just a 7am - 3pm E-Coli van… :frowning:

Love that one gunner… E-Coli van       … problem is it’s very true I never use them, I just park up and make a roll if I am away.

We had a van that came around to the last place where I used to work and most people called it The Chuck Wagon the food was that bad.

There’s a new one just up the A38 near Webbs Garden centre from Wychbold, called the Pitstop, much better than the old Wychbold cafe.
Cheers Dave.
