Ok i know stupid question

as the topic says its a stupid question  but there is something i gotta ask or i will never know. When a truck is 6X4 or 6X2 what does it mean? i know its something to do with the wheels but what does it exactly mean? is it anything to do with the axles aswell?
or
is it like when a car is 4x4 and all wheels control the vehicle?

tar for clearing it up

6x4 = 6 wheels (3 axles as double wheels count as one) with 4 wheels (2 axles) driving

6x2 = 6 wheels with 2 wheels (one axle) driving

Thats the only way I can explain it. I hope that helps.

New Blood

And that meas the rigid you trained in, and probably your car too, are 4x2, and almost no-one uses 6x4 or 6x2 to train drivers here, for rigid or artic.

I’ve actually seen plenty, however, they lift the rear axle.

ok cheers i thought that was the case. SO if its a 6x4 is it the front two axles that do the controlling?

Nope if it has 2 steering axles at the front and one driven at the rear that is a 6x2 otherwise know as a Chinese Six.

Two axles at the front and two at the rear that is an 8x4 - but to confuse it even more you can have a 8x2 which is a 4 axle vehicle with only the rear axle driven.

Confused yet
