Oh no! Someone's nicked the gear lever

andy12:
Dont get all this auto hate? I love em

Yep flick an go .
Don’t know what all the fuss is about, 2 left turns out of the depot and its on cruse for 2hrs then it’s 4right turns and I’m at the other depot.

I must admit I do once up to speed flick it into M so I can drop (holding) the gears going up the 2 big hills I have which then also allows the use of the crappy exhaust break without it banging well into the over rev red band :mar green:

A good driver can drive and adapt to any type of box

I’ve adapted because I’ve had no choice which is what really grinds my gears…oops [emoji4]
I’ve adapted but I still hate them.

automatic drivers are bell ends in my book

So drivers are not expected to work at an all auto fleet now?
You’re talking more rubbish than at a recycling convention.

I had an old opticruise and it was terrible. Went back to Scania manual and it was a breath of fresh air. Then I was given a new Scania with the fully automatic gearbox with no clutch. Must say it’s excellent.

I completely agree. The first Opticruise was just hopeless. But the ones without without clutch pedal works fine, 2012 model I drive i don’t really haven any complaints about and would definitely not want a manual, yes you have to use manual sometimes since it doesn’t have eyes but so it is with every other auto to. The ones found in the Streamline I have tested are on pair with the i-shift, they work really well.

Well I survived my first day with an autobox on a truck. The Volvo i-shift is actually very smooth changing gearbox. Just left it in full auto all day long. Its coupled to quite a powerful engine of about 420 or 440hp, so the truck didn’t dawdle too much, although I would have preferred slightly faster changes when pulling across roundabouts. :open_mouth:

Does it make driving a truck easier? Well undoubtably yes, with no gears to change and no foot on and off the clutch in heavy traffic.

Now you auto boys keep your goddam mouths quiet about how easy life is now.

I drive an auto… By choice, no.

I learned to drive in an ancient leyland freighter, passed my test in a ancient daf and cut my teeth on an ancient Iveco cargo with a slap over box.
Just because the boss bought an auto, doesn’t make me a bell end thanks very much.
Im just working with what I’m given and not moaning like a girl about it.

I don’t think dodgem’s are articulated Pete. I’m pretty sure you still need a fairground CPC though.

Module 2 is candyfloss from memory. If you do 3 modules in a row, you can choose any prize from the top shelf.

you actually make a good point i wonder how long it will be before you have to pass a test or sit a module to be able to drive a dodgem car ?

in this day and age of health a safety bollox i am sure someone in Brussels will be hard at work, trying to pass a motion to force dodgem car drivers to have to comply with Europe laws.

however i digress from the topic sorry about that as i would hate to offend, but to cut a long post short

If only you had to pass the CPC to post on an Internet forum…

Don’t worry about Desypete, he got more issues to deal with than one of them build it yourself magazines.

For anyone who hasn’t driven a Scania opti-cruise, you don’t know what you are missing!

There is nothing better than a false neutral. Especially when pulling out at junctions/roundabouts etc.
You are just waiting for the abuse to start!

Try using the three pedal version! I’d rather scrub my nuts with a cheese grater than drive them! We have them at our place and I refuse point blank to drive them. Either give me a straight manual or a straight auto, none of this semi clutch auto ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–

LIBERTY_GUY:
From my understanding, it is a Volvo i-shift.

lucky man! :grimacing: FH16 750 BHP? :sunglasses: best auto gearbox going  just feather the " Acceleration " and change in the green band 1300 - 1400 RPMs and twelve to the gallon, EASY

They are the [zb] im talking about Radar. As said by someone else, the full auto’s are great and I find our manual 12 speeders pretty good too.

Those semi things are about as much use as a French border guard.

and it was going so well until the last line

Been driving the above mentioned MAN 400 auto tippers for approx 3 months on a mixture of landfill, motorway earthworks and general muck away and got to say I like it,sure, Jonny fastpants in his 400 Cat engined Foden can beat me at the lights, but when he’s wondering round the landfill up to his ankles in dirty nappies looking for a tow,I’m in the cafe having my brekkie. Currently working on a large earthworks project with approx 25 other tippers of all makes, auto and manual and the MAN more than holds it own. I’ve seen a new Daf auto stuck on level ground spinning the wheels, and a Volvo Auto dig itself into a two foot hole for no apparent reason other than driver abuse. The first muck shifter I drove was an Iveco 8 wheeler with an Eaton twin splitter, compared to that the MAN is a Rolls Royce.

Welcome LeeLee I’ll agree with you regarding the MAN autos off road, the DX setting is good although a lot drivers say their hopeless in the mud. Johnny Fastpants in his Foden 400 obviously can’t drive one off road (I can :grimacing: ) and Daf autos were very poor, hoping they’ve improved as we’ve just got a CF Construction auto on demo.
Another good off roader I found was the Merc Axor (apologies for saying the words Axor and good in the same sentance).

Still going well with my first experience on an autobox on a truck. Having said that, I did jump into my car after work on Tuesday and crunch the gears trying to put it into reverse. Does help to remember to push the clutch in first on a manual, when you have just jumped out of an automatic after ten hours.

Off road, I am used to feathering the accelerator in combination with the clutch to pull myself out the mire, but an autobox is a little more tricky when you lose traction, even with the diff-locks engaged. That is the only time I would have preferred a manual in the last week though.

I am ā€˜old skool’ in lots of ways, being used to old style manual boxes I still blip the throttle when changing gears on downshifts as still remember what pigs some of those old manual boxes were. If these auto boxes on modern trucks could change a bit quicker when pulling away from stationary, they would be absolutely perfect. I still don’t trust them 100 percent, but I am slowly getting converted.

Can you raise the tipper and drive forward with yours Liberty Guy? I couldn’t with the MAN, made you look a bit amateurish when spreading out stone as you had to each thing separately.

I’m glad your enjoying it. I really ought to get over my hatred of them but I so miss having a manual. I always thought mastering 12 or 16 gears was part n parcel of being a proper truck driver and found it satisfying when I did. Then I had that taken away from me and now I feel inadequate because anybody can jump in a truck and drive it away and look as good as me [emoji13]

6 speed gear box. 3 over 3 and has like a splitter for higher and lower.

Much better than my old Iveco auto box. What a pile of sh** that was.

I had a brand new Volvo FMX with I-shift,hated it at first, but got to like it in the end.if used in manual it would bloody fly when needed lol. just not on the tip-ā– ā– ā– ā–  poor off road(I managed to get ā– ā– ā– ā–  very badly on a dry tip !!!)
I also used an earlier I shift FM,and got hopelessly stuck on some wet grass!!! it was empty and with the diff locks in, as soon as I gave it some power the traction control cut in and left me bolloxed haha.
and yes I do have extensive off road driving experience.it wasn’t me it was the poxy autobox that got me stuck :sunglasses:
