Well tomorrow is going to be a novel experience for me, my first time with an automatic gearbox in a truck. Surprisingly it is on a rigid tipper that will also be going off road on building sites and quarries etc.
Driven lots of auto cars but never an auto truck. Is there anything I need to look out for (other than the missing gear lever ) ?
Just pray it’s not a ZF based auto. The best part of those boxes ran down the inside of their mother’s thigh! (especially when fitted to an Iveco).
I’ve had the misfortune to have had nothing but crappy autos for about 4 years, mainly the worst of them all the MAN asschronic. We do site work but in artics and they are the most infuriating invention on a truck ever. The only advise I can give is stick it in gear (with a stupid switch) and be prepared for questions like- have you just passed your test mate? I can’t believe somebody actually road tested them after they were ‘developed’ and got back to the factory and said yeah, perfect! Put it into production just like that! I still frequently say if you drove a manual on your driving test and used the gearbox exactly like autos do you’d FAIL! 'Nuff said.
If your ‘lucky’ you’ll be using either a Renault or a Volvo! They’re about the best in my experience which is like saying herpes is the best of the STD’s.
Treat the throttle a bit more gently when moving off until you are used to it. Remember it’s not like a car auto for hill starts, i.e. will roll back until you accelerate.
Hardest thing is probably roundabouts, though the volvo box is not the worst IMHO. It does at least start to move reasonably rapidly.
Try and enjoy it…!
I-shift? You lucky lad!
When given an Iveco auto, even the most placid, proffeshnial wheel twirler would/will be ready to commit unmentionable acts on anyone connected with the manufacture, fitting or purchasing of said gearboxes!

I’ve never had the ‘pleasure’, last Iveco I drove was about 15 years ago. Totally crap truck but not a bad gearbox iirc.
Hahahaahahahhahahah [emoji1][emoji1][emoji1][emoji1][emoji1][emoji1][emoji1][emoji1] I love sarcasm…[emoji53][emoji53][emoji53][emoji53][emoji53]you were being sarcastic weren’t you? [emoji53][emoji53][emoji53][emoji53][emoji53][emoji53]

I learnt in one, so sounds like things can only get better. Happy Days!!!
I have one at the mo and I reckon people in vehicles coming round towards me as I pull out at roundabouts must think I have tourettes, as I urge my child of Satan to accelerate away and please ‘don’t go from 3rd to 6th’ at full weight. That’s if the box allowed ‘drive’ to be taken at the correct time in the first place!!!

I like variety. I don’t usually drive an auto. On the fairly rare occasions I do, I find it a nice change and do actually enjoy it (but it is usually a volvo box which as already said are up there with the best of them)
So I wasn’t being overtly sarcarstic, no! I think he will enjoy a volvo auto anyway. For the first few hours at least, then it gets a bit boring.
I’ve got an auto Renault and its lovely to drive. Only problem is that it will default to first gear if the ride level is not correct, this is doubley annoying if you’re not on level ground so the box has a hissy fit.

The one & only time I ever drove an auto anything was when my ex had an MG, I didn’t like it at all, but I love it now I’m used to it in the Daf trucks - and although it’s on a stick we can still use manual gearing, at least with the exhaust brake yer clutch foot has something to do rather than flapping about redundantly

This ^^
Take your (and others) life in your hands pulling away from roundabouts, hate autos
I usually go semi-auto where I can select my own gears tbh, also not as boring
