Nothing much, I knew this was coming on Saturday but they put an embargo on any replies until printed. I’m just surprised it took this long to get on here. This scientific poll was commissioned by IAM, the institute of advanced motorists. Done online by anyone that pwished to reply, I’m sure none of them were motorists, and is the perfect example of how statistics can prove what you want. If fact the poll shows that only 2.2% jump red lights regularly, with 17% doing it occasionally. The 57% figure represents the amount that have jumped a red light ever, they just decided that a bigger figure would look better and it appears to have done the job. By the way later editions show the percentage of vehicle drivers that do it regularly, any guesses?
I have never said that cyclists are angels but crap reporting on inaccurate “facts” does nobody any good. These so called facts will be read and believed by many and used to berate cyclists even more, as in the " fact" that you don’t pay road tax so get off the road type of rubbish.
i don`t need a newspaper to tell me that a good proportion of cyclists are arrogant

From personal observation that is complete tosh!
with 17% doing it all the time
More accurate I’d suggest, again, from personal observation.
The 57% figure represents the amount that have jumped a red light ever
I’ll give you that one.
, they just decided that a bigger figure would look better
A bit like you’re trying to do with your smaller figures perhaps?

I have never said that cyclists are angelsI have never said all cyclists are bad and am critical of bad driving whether it’s cyclists, motorcyclists, cars, trucks or whatever. Higher standards all round would be good.

There’s little in the way of facts here I agree but it’s a talking point and maybe something will come out of that one day.
The problem I have with these facts though is that joe public believes them as 100% gospel, it doesn’t matter what is put in front of them after that to disprove it. It’s even been quoted on the bbc news now so that’s that , it must be true.
You can see a similar thing on this site, drivers hours, vosa giving you a fine for every turn of the legs etc. people, even normally sensible ones, will see and hear this guff and think its true. You say the 57% is about correct, that’s fine but I don’t see it anywhere near that level, it must depend on when and where you drive.
As for a good proportion being arrogant! How is that worked out and what exactly is a good proportion? You haven’t been parking in a bike lane have you?

it is worked out with my eyes, from what i see whilst going about my life…good proportion, significant amount…whatever.
Good proportion, significant amount? How many is that? If you see 4 cyclists a day and 3 do it then, yes a significant amount. If you see 1000 cyclists a day and 3 do it then no. It’s typical of what gets quoted. If it happens a couple of times in front of you then all cyclists do it all the time, that’s not the case. I see at least one truck that will pull out in front of a car, without indicating, causing the car to brake every night, does that mean we all do it, or is that good proportion, significant amount or whatever?

nah, that`s a small proportion or an insignificant amount
Have you nothing else better to do Tony than spend the day trawling through the Daily Mail and linking all their ridiculous ■■■■■■■■ stories to this site???there doesn’t seem to be a day that goes by without you putting 3 or 4 Daily Mail stories on here most of them totally irrelevant to the PDF…why dont you go argue on the comments on the Daily Mail website with all the other retards that read that BS instead of posting it on here!!
you don`t have to be a bad cyclist to be an arrogant cyclist
these are the people i`m talking about…a couple of them get splattered (insignificant amount) and they expect the rest us to change our way of life just to suit them.
and what about in london…nearly every set of lights you stop at,youll get some turd go through on red...don
t matter if there`s pedestrians crossing or not.
My main bugbear with cyclists is why dont they use the cycle lanes when they are provided ?
The local councils spend millions putting red tarmac and white lines down and only about half of cyclists use them.
Its about time a penalty charge was introduced to “encourage” their use
