Off up to Isle of Skye next week to deliver to the YHA hostel up there.
It’s 20 years since I was up there, just wondering about somewhere to park up i.e. cafes, pubs, off road laybys. I’m setting off on Tuesday for a 1pm Delivery on the Wednesday. According to the sat nav it’s at least 9hrs 45 & that’s without delays or breaks. Hope to get 2/3rds of the way on Tuesday?
Which YHA ? there are 3 hostels up there .
SYHA @ Broadford, Uig Youth Hostel @ Uig, and Skywalker near Carbost.
.
If its the YHA at Uig ? There is a layby stopping point about 1/2 mile just before you reach it on the left , overlooking the bay. Hope for good weather, it may get windy and chilly. . As for food and drinkies , Portree is probably your best bet. May pay you to stock up prior at the supermarket en route and be prepared with essentials, with a small cooker and kettle for a fresh brew. . Depends what your driving and how big, as to where you can park there. Place isnt that big, and nor are the roads. Youll be going via the A87 so Portree comes before you reach Uig anyway, if thats where your going.
Safe and happy trip, say hello to the sheep for me
Ah, beat me to it , must of been typing at same time , your off to Skywalker by Carbost, end of the narrow track.
Take your pick for off road parking spots , just make sure its solid ground before applying handbrake. Can get boggy peats in places when wet.
If you fancy camping en-tente, there is a campsite edge of Portree (as you head into Portree - bear right - through town- 1/2/ to 3/4 mile campsite on r/h/s.

YHA at glenbrittle it’s on the south of the island. I’ve google mapped it the roads look really narrow, Driving 17t rigid!
Got the supplies cooker kettle, cans, camera etc.
& yes I am a lucky sod but it is a 1 drop & return empty!!!
even better then unless you want to max your 13-15 hours. i love it up Scotland especialy from Perth onwards, only ever done North West Scotland once and that was a 1 dropper up in Achfray the scenery was stunning, nothing on the road apart from sheep and deer i kept getting out the truck to take pics as i didn’t know when or if i’d be up that way again.
I once set of from Callender, tipped a full load of road stone on Skye, back down to fort William, loaded some from the quarry near corpach and got back down to Callender in a 10 hour drive. Would have been slightly easier if I’d had a splitter, but it buggered up the day before! Lots of gear changes.
Lovely drive up there if the weather is good, but a bloody slog on a wet and windy day!
Go back to Kyleakin, just the Skye side of the bridge. There’s some coach bays you can park in fine and free and its pretty quiet. Saucy Mary’s bar/ hostel there too which is pretty good, free wi-fi, good food etc generally always something in at night and pretty popular with backpackers.
That Glen Brittle road is very narrow. You will be coming off the bridge then heading for Slighahan.then left and a left again down the glen. The roads wont be busy at this time of year, but you wont be travelling at your usual speeds. The S.Y.H.A. are a seperate entity from the Y.H.A. which stands for- your husband assured-.
