Hiya…akacheesy…SORRY from all of us at TN .its eddiy,s fault really , dose he call it tramping■■? I,ll put my life on the line and say
Eddy stobart ltd never did general haulage tramping (you can,t be a tramp in a suit can you). At stobarts they should call it depot
to depot work.or circular haulage.the computer always knows where your going. with tramping in the older days you and the boss
did,nt have a clue what direction you was going(and sometimes that was good)Its a pitty you can,t do tramping as we knew it
its was more fun tham we can explane.all the loads was a differant shape, half the time the sheets was not big enough or you
was short of timbers or chocks, so you made do…sometimes drivers looked like tramps they was black as coal delivering
biscuits or other food stuff. It is perhaps nicer to be clean and tidy but hell it must be so boreing without the fun we had.
John

I think this says it all well done that man.

Spare change for the phone box.

A sense of humour I most definatley do have. Thanks for the posts dudes, made me giggle.

you can also kiss your life goodbye

hiya Akacheesy, Good luck with your new job, hope you enjoy it.Let us all know in 12 months time if you are still at it.
Tramping tho i dont think so.I liked the bit about the list of must haves, when i was TRAMPING in the 50s and 60s the
wife dindnt have half of what you are taking,in the house never mind in the lorry, anyway good luck and stay safe.Cheers Ted.

Most of the replies here show Trucknet to be a useless resource for helping newbies and any questions they may have. Is this forum really so full of ■■■■-taking, bitter, know-it-all, jealous drivers■■?

As for those who come out with “It’s not tramping nowadays, bahhh, not the like the old days!”, well, I’m sure your [lack of] help was appreciated!! :unamused: :unamused: I guess the OP put the thread in here hoping to get some useful advice from the ‘more experienced’ members of Tnet, not some ‘dinosaur esque’ smart-arsed comments.

I still don’t get this obsession/jealousy thing that some folk have with Stobarts! They’re advertising for drivers (trampers) who can earn £35-40k. Even if some of that is made up from expenses, so what? I bet that’s going to come in quite handy, having a lower basic taxable salary, when the latest benefit reduction plans are brought in! Of all the drivers I know on different jobs/contracts, not many of them get anywhere near to £40k. The trampers I know mostly want to work their max hours while they’re away which is what they’ll probably get with ESL.

I hope ‘cheesy’ enjoys the job and I know he has been given some ‘proper’ advice now. Don’t worry about the ‘unhelpful zb’s’ of this so-called helpful community, you just crack-on.

How can anyone call it ‘Tramping’ in this day and age ?

Buy 24 volt stuff, 12 volt takes for ever to boil water etc.

Tramping means being away for weeks on end, not two or three nights a week. No driver in his right mind would think of changing his own tyres FFS … I think that on one occassion over here I had a blow out, called the office and the silly cow on the other end asked “Do you have a spare ?”
“yes I have a spare … but …”
“Call back when you have changed it then” she interupted and hung up. I promptly called her back to tell her that she either got a tyre comapny out, the trailer would be abandodned on the spot … a tyre company arrived within the hour.

hiya,
Well that’s me with a flea in my ear, but i still say if you don’t have to find your own work ie phone “around” yeh you can use your mobile we had to find a phone box that worked and could load what we wanted for wherever we wanted to go, so long as it payed the guvnor was happy, he was able to sublet the work you was’nt there to do thereby him getting the percentage of what the backload was losing and virtually no empty running so anything else is depot to depot so really just long distance driving and nobody will convince me that is “tramping” more like day or night trunking i’ve done that as well and that was money for old rope and capable of being carried out wearing top hat and tails, when on nights anyway.
thanks harry long retired.

Spot on Harry, nobody wished the lad any harm but he should have gone on the Professional Driver’s Forum first not on here, the job has changed beyond recognition although I suppose phone boxes are still vandalised  .No such thing as tramping today, tramping was when you found yer own loads out of yer little black or red book, and you knew who to use who not to use.The lad in question will be long-distance trunking.
And I’ve heard that some wagons have radios fitted nowadays, whatever next…
Tin hat on…

Look Cheesy & Marcus don’t get a “cob on” because some of the “sages” on the thread are giving you a description of what “real” tramping was like years ago! We are talking about two differen’t era’s here and “Fast Eddies” current operation has nothing whatsoever in common with yesteryears operations. However no matter how “The Fast One” tries to reinvent the wheel with regard to Haulage,Transport,Logistics or whatever new description, fully intergrated ect.ect. it is the same job as it was years and years ago i.e.moving goods from one place to another! only now its a lot easier! “Fast Eddies” use of the term “Tramping” may be their idea of paying “lip service” to the past but it would seem that it is just the term used(quite wrongly in my opinion) to-day to describe depot to depot trunking with the odd delivery thrown in! As for lumping your expenses in with your wages this is totally out of order as expenses are to subsidise you while living away from home. They are not meant to be classed as part of your taxable wage.I am suprised that HMRC does not take a closer look at Eddies wage structure! I wouldn’t like to be a fly on the wall when they get hit with a huge tax and NHI demand----I wonder who will foot the bill----“The Fast One” or the individual driver!!! Watch this space!Bewick.

Lighten up FFS , what did akacheese expect? Aftrer all he did post this thread on the ‘old’ forum :unamused: I think the old lads are entitled to a bit of leg pulling aren’t they? Even though there replies were tongue in cheek it was still an interesting read in to what the true tramper used to carry with them when it was an interesting job .
I don’t get the ‘bitter’/obsession & jealousy thing you rant on about?  … The Stobart depot at crick is always advertising for drivers- says it all really :unamused:
