Off road truck driving day

Hi guys and girls,

I’m in the process of organising a charity off road truck manoeuvring day, for a charity called Hope and Aid Direct.

I have 14 people interested already, but having big problems finding a large hard standing area where members of the public (who have a car licence) can have a go at reversing and the use of gears in an artic with a trailer. I have been in touch with the part owners of Ashbourne Airfield Derbyshire, and I don’t think they are interested.

I want to bring awareness to people who think driving an artic and reversing an artic is easy (we all know it is but they think it’s a science)

And to earn some money for the charity.

Can someone suggest somewhere and how to contact the owners etc. an airfield would be great and as near to Derbyshire as possible

Thanks

Roly

are there any racing circuits near you that do truck racing events? they might be interested in it on a quiet weekend?

We have Castle Donington track and they are not intersted to help.

Your best bet may be the Defense School of Transport. They have the vehicles, a road course and off road course all on the same site and are used to doing charity days/off-road events.

Thanks very much, have e-mailed them, and with fingers crossed will get a reply soon

There’s an airfield (dissused) just outside Melton Mowbray, on the Great Dalby road that is used for various ‘other’ events i.e. Bank Holiday markets etc. There’s also a manouevreing area that is used by (I think) Coles of Leicester HGV Driving School - they might be the best bet to get a contact for the airfield.

Melton Mowbray ain’t so far from Derby . . . . .

The Marie Curie cancer charity hold a number of “Ladies’ Driving Challenge” events (I think) throughout the Country. There is certainly an annual event at Throckmorton Airfield in Worcestershire, where they are driving artics, Fire appliances, ‘funny’ cars, ‘skid pan’ vehicles, and whatever else they can get hold off.

For contacts, try them.

And for any members with wives, daughters, mothers, etc, with an interest in driving, it’s a ■■■■ good day out. I think all they ask is that everyone participating raises a little over £100 in sponsorship.

And not only are they always looking for companies to supply vehicles, accompanying drivers, etc, they are always keen to recruit ‘marshalls’. The IAM (amongst other organisations) always tries to help in this respect but, I’m sure they would be keen to solicit the services of anyone involved in the Transport Industry, even if they could be available for just half of the day.

It is one of the few occasions when us men have a bevy a adrenalin enriched females obedient to our every command.
