I passed my test for C on the 23rd March and like a good boy I duly sent off the licence (I know that the test centre could have done that but I was that shocked at passing - he tore a strip off me before telling me I had passed - that I was not really taking in anything he was saying). Well, new guy on the block so not much hope for me?
Sat down last thursday and filled out one of those on line cv efforts and applied for about 12 jobs at both 7.5 and C posted by agencies. Friday morning I get a call from one of them, ‘can you come in and register on monday?’. I explain that my licence is off at dvla ‘no problems, we can ring and check, come in at 1pm’. So I did, quick interview -'most firms prefer some experience driving the big toys, do you mind still driving 7.5 and if needed the vans? - and I am registered… sit back and wait, ring in next week along with the other agencies to see if there is anything…
Get home and I get a phone call from them ‘got an induction taking place on weds morning for a firm that sometimes uses nights, can you make it?’ I know its gonna be unpaid but I think maybe its just enough to put my name in the agency’s head so I say yea, time n place? Text follows 5 mins later.
Get up tuesday morning and the phone rings ‘Hi Iain, got some multi drop today, sorry its only the little vans, you interested?’ time and place please, gonna be about an hour before I can get there, is that OK? So I turn up at 08.48 (well thats what the clock card read) and get passed from pillar to post -we dont need you- until at 11.00 they realised they did (I aint bothered, I get paid from 08.48, take all the time you want lads) actually need me… sort this lot into a route and I will go get a van for you… long day to say the least, but it was work.
So I go for the induction this morning, can you be there between 9 and 9.30, get a text asking if I was on the way at 08.45 and as I am stuck in traffic I reply yes, but traffics throwing a wobbler, running a bit late. Get another text asking how long but traffics flowing, tried to call but its straight to voice mail, sod it… get to the site 09.07, the agent was there as well and she seemed pleased that I was ‘prompt’. Induction was ok, bit of banter and jokes, showed me the rosta - its in delivery order, we try where we can to get the phone number of the person receiving the goods not the one ordering them… I take it you did not read the ‘try to make the drivers life a misery’ memo then 
- all in all it seemed to go well.
I come home and … Can you work class C tomorrow, 6 am start? ‘They know I only have photocopies of the licence at the mo?’ Oh yea, better check… Hi Iain, 6am, st helens, text to follow, they know your newly passed and said they dont need dead heros so take it easy and safe, thanks for covering this…
Moral… its picking up out there, slowly but bit by bit its getting busier
Now I need to get a day bag together… well its not as easy to find somewhere to park the big vans is it
and then by that time you will be well established with the good ones im with 6 now it was 7 but one of the new ones i signed with tried to bully me into taking a job for next when i already have work lined up and he wanted me to let the other Agent ( who found me work from day one ) down 
when i said no no no he said well you are the only one on my books with a moffet ticket and i will remember that
