Another Tossmac OD bites the dust at the end of August in Clitheroe
Chin up shag, on to pastures new.

Sad,
But please tell everyone the whole story so the crazies who want to sub to such companies learn the truth and realities.
I am amazed how any O/D can make a vehicle pay with the haulage rates the big quarry companies pay. The costs of buying and running a vehicle and wages, just donât add up.
The long established operator can keep going, but any new operator is really up against it.

Same old story unfortunately, the money to pull a tanker to the far end of Spain is now under 70% of what we got in 1998 from one company we hauled for in Spain ( as they have Jonny foreigner who will ) It barely covers the costs. Starting out now is a sure way to become a suicide case in my opinion .
Clitheroe has never got back on it,s feet since 2007 when Quarry / Upper Manangement took out the main crusher plant and decided to use mobile crushers instead. When that did,nt work, the same people thought that importing stone from Skipton Rock was the future So send wagons to Skipton Rock but use a cut rate While all this was going on the main quarry is now flooded, the bottom asphalt plant has not run for more than 2 years. So in a nut shell - inept quarry / upper managers, Fuel costs, tyre costs, rate cuts, capped loads, insurance,a quarry full of stone thats under water NO WORK the take over by Laughfarge, being told by minions that if there is any night work on you can only work if the wagon is available for the whole period of the work, if not then your not working certain wagons getting preferance over others not being able to run out of any Tossmac / Laughfarge quarrys sitting in the yard and watching the certain preferred wagons rolling straight onto the weighbridge and get a load after you have sat there for 2-3Hrs,having to dig about 1-2 tons of tar off the body floor because you cannot use any grit (On You Tube) under Shaun g, Trackers, load planners being miles away, a transport manager who doe,snt give a FÂŁ$K. ETC ETC The list go,s on and on Who wants to be a TarLar owner driver. so after 20+ years my mate has decided to pack up and move to pastures new
It will be no consolation at all to your mate but it isnât only Tarmac who have done this⌠All you have said above ^^^^ is exactly the same as is happening elsewhere and itâs bloody annoying ( to put it very mildly⌠)when you have been working in or around the place for years and years, and then you have to watch the bean counters come in and try and re-invent the wheel!!
Ineptitude doesnât even begin to cover it There doesnât seem to be any long term plans any more - short term gains, maximise profit ( mostly through lack of outlay ) and then move on to the next company, leaving an unholy mess behind!
when I first started in the early 70s I rang tarmac clitheroe about some work and the rates they offered would hardly cover the fuel, and same with every quarry for miles around clitheroe ,Lancaster ,skipton.i found I could make a good living buying the materials and selling them on and making my own haulage rates.it has puzzled me for years how tarmac and others keep getting o.ds even to this day.it shows there are still plenty of mugs around.is anyone prepared to say what the rates per ton per mile are today on average and then I can do some up to date calculations,i doubt it as o/ds thik they can make it pay but never could and never will.they are lucky to make what they could by driving for someone else.so come on then lets have some figures. regards, jack preston.
I was talking to an OD yesterday, who only does muck and recycled aggregate haulage now. He reckons the quarried sector is struggling due to the increasing use of reclaimed materials so rates are being slashed.
We do a lot of recycled aggs

Better potential for backloads there. I was talking to an ex colleague the other day who said Smithsâ drivers are on crap (never was that good) load bonuses at the moment because theyâre not getting the backloads as âEarthline and Sheehans are undercutting by selling recycled aggregates.â Smiths have ther new wash/recycled plant running âbut nobody wants to tip there as theyâre too dear.â Whether they are or not I donât know, but many of the small companies and grab operators are using Earthlinesâ facilities for sure, and many subbies that haul for EL used to do lots of work for Smiths.
It seems the problem isnât restricted to just the large quarry operators. âŚ
