Obviously have to much time

driving along the m62 yesterday caught up with a wagon and drag carrying bales of hay .now with the amount that was flying off wondered how much is actually lost before it reaches its destination :open_mouth:

I asked this question before but slightly differently. I said if you went from land o’groats to johns end how much straw would be left on arrival.

technical if cop was having bad day driver could get done for insecure load?? Bales get smaller as straw flys off trailer working itself loose of the once snug fit straps? If you get my drift

I never understand why they dont sheet bales of hay…

how far would you have to drive before there was none left?

shouldnt be allowed on the road without full sheet up/or in curtainside, bloody mess they leave behind, you end up picking straw out the front of your motor for half an hour. they all run a lot faster than 90kmh as well.

If you look closely at a bale of hay you’ll see that its bound in a metal mesh, so quite a lot of it would get to its destination

Never seen a bale bound by metal mesh, was always string I thought

It’s not metal, it’s plastic. Rounds are rolled and wrapped in plastic mesh in the bailer, it stops them falling apart because hay doesn’t bind to itself like straw does.

That’s not a Smart idea as it tends to catch fire if I remember Correct something to do with damp

To sheet a load of hay/straw on a 45 ft trailer you would need a sheet iro 32 ft wide and 70 ft long or a number of smaller sheets!
the next thing you need is loads of time and no wind, if i brush a tree/ low branch with a sheet on it will most likely rip and sheets that size dont come cheap,
when i move straw i get paid from a to b how much blows off is not an issue unless i an selling it by weight and even then the amount you are talking it’s only a minor issue, i can’t see mr wurzel offering to pay extra to cover the cost of a replacement sheet can you?
the only time i would use a sheet is for the higher value haylage to ovoid damage to the wrap

I Haul hay & straw every day from east england to west wales every day ,Its not sesonal to us straw hauliers because most farmers buy it any time in fact winters very busy when the animals come in out the fields .I only sheet if im parked up for say 2 days (the week end )if its heavy rain, and even then it doesnt hurt the big bales ,We all carry moisture probes and stick the probes into the bales on collection to test the moistures not over 20% (thats to make sure the bales werent baled wet ,if so they wont spread when strings cut to bed out animals )Ive testd 2inchs of the top layer after heavy rain and a 400 mile trip with no sheet and my moisture probes has given the same reading as collection start. (Thats big bales and round bales straw) as far as lose straw goes haha weight wise we dont shed that much to notice ,We get paid by the tonne and tare lorry and weigh every load so we would notice belive me ! .WE dont sheet mainly because Trees ! .I only sheet Small bales Hay and even then ive ripped the sheets front to back on trees, dont forget we deliver where sometimes only 4x4 goes and we need to go high to get the volume for weight (all money by tonne)so no idont sheet much !.West Wales doesnt produce hardly any corn unlike the east, so no corn means no straw (the stalk ) so were flatout hauling straw to the west for hill farmers to bed there animals out and to feed it .Hay i sheet just because its exspensive .Its hard work and very ,very dirty so the less sheeting the better !! its ok if you dont do it and see us and grumble ,but belive me 16ft5 high with sheets not nice.and a piece straw wont blow off &kill you.ITs straw !, I only have 15mins after loading straw flying then it settles to nothing what so ever

We cant all drive curtainsiders and just steer . Makes me laugh when people mention combustion ,in 32 years trucking straw ive never seen or spoke to a straw driver /haulier where thats happend. Like i said we carry moisture probes and test the bales on collection, only to make sure the bales of straw aint wet, damp ,when there baled .The bale will other wise stick together like glue and wont spread when strings are cut. Its a natural product a small piece straw and wont hurt you when it blows off hahahah Ive drove threw autumn leaves blowing around on motoway worse then straw .Truckers are worse then the public complaing about other truckers in the uk instead of geting on with it.
