Obstruction windscreen

Had it twice years ago one bloke got a warning at Dartford Tunnel roundabout for flags in the window.
And another got gobby with the VI official as they was then at Daventry and won him self a free mot at Daventry
But that’s another story.

The annoying thing is that the same regulations apply to cars/vans…yet how often do you see VOSA sniffing around a reps car with 2 or 3 different devices stuck to the windscreen?

It won’t be a FREE MoT, I can guarantee you that

The thing that gets me is all the satnav screens right in the line of sight and glowing away brightly at night. They even distract me in other vehicles if I look across as I, or they, overtake. The sheer glare must be terrible inside.

No mate its been going on for yrs.In the 70s I had to take my mates truck for a day and got pulled in leeds by the ministry man[vosa]as it is now.Now my mate used to have the flags stuck across the windscreen in a w formation[remember them you old uns] soon as the man saw them I was told in no uncertain terms to remove or I would be fined, and that was before he checked anything else.

Vosa inspector attending our yard last week // out come was there is to be no obstruction above the parked windscreen wiper level , so to all drivers that have banners (i e football club make of truck etc and cd ,s )cd,s are on truck table , they have to be removed as they WOULD constitute a prohibition should you be stopped in a road side check // so what bout sat nav phone holder

Have any forum members had this problem or been issued with such notice

Anything anywhere on the windscreen in the area swept by the wiper blades is illegal. That includes Satnav and mobile phone holder.

It is also a MOT failure so you need to make sure you remove them all before your wagon goes in for test. I once took a wagon for test and the MOT tester told me to remove my Satnav before I went in bless his heart.

Oh and this isn’t just for wagons, it is for all vehicles including cars.

dowahdiddyman:
So technically all the later model tgx`s are illegal as they come with a shelf built into the middle of the dash and this sits above the height of the wipers.
Strange as it must of passed european type approval.

Anything that is supplied OEM with the vehicle is OK. it’s only things you put in later that cause a problem. Even then it needs to encroach into the swept area by more than 40mm, which a lot of shelves may not do. Obviously what you put on top of the shelf might be a problem.

In most cases VOSA would simply issue a PG9 prohibition with no penalty for the driver. As an immediate prohibition this slaps 100 points onto the Operators OCRS score - for which I doubt the operator will thank the driver. Those points then stay there for 3 years, although they do diminish in value at year two and three.

The rules are quite clear regarding view to the front.

Can toll tags be put in the screen in such a position that they do not come into the sweep area of the wipers?

how many people have got licence discs stuck to the screen inside the wiper sweep? :unamused:

VOSA will have to issue themselves a fine if they go after fog lamps lost track of the amount of times i’ve been pulled and the galaxy has had fogs on. Even pointed out to them in Perry Bar that one of their fogs wasn’t working didn’t see him getting a suspeneded prohibition altho to be fair I don’t think that the wheel tapper was to thorough that night

Official items such as tax discs, operators licence discs, tags for tolls etc are OK as long as they are as far out of vision as possible.

Drivers ‘aids’ such as internal or external sun blinds are also OK

I have a CB, a sat nav holder, and my mobile phone holder on the windscreen in my old Vitara. It went through 4 MOT’s like that with no issues.

I have often wondered how Land Rover drivers get around this. Their windscreens are only 14 inches high, and 7 inches of that is obscured by the spare wheel on the bonnet.

Hmm

If it’s the swept area of screen, I wonder if anyone has ever purchased a shorter (not much obviously) wiper blade? You wouln’t get away with a ridiculously smaller blade but it might be enough to get your sat nav on…

Not that I would bother. Apart from a carefully placed ■■■■ nav, I can’t see the point in having a sign in the windscreen telling everyone you’re called ‘Dave’ or ‘Spider’ or whatever. And as for tassels and girly curtains - no ta. I occasionally wonder if drivers with the frilly curtains and dream catchers have matching handbags…but not often. :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing:

In the 1980’s these flags were the norm and even when stopped by wheeltappers nothing was said they were only interested in your records and that you were within your weight limits.

If you refer to my earlier post you will see what happened to me when I got pulled by the ministry.
