Obscure tachograph head needed (I think!)

Hi
Probably wrong forum section, but I’ll start here.
I’m still helping do up this old scanny 82 former fire engine as a charity project. To cut long story short, most of intended uses will not need a tacho (will be motorhome), but if carrying sporting equipment for more than personal recreational use it is technically a living van and would need a tacho according to VOSA. If it’s not going to be too complicated / expensive it would seem simpler to have one in and use it when needed. Particularly as the owner intends driving in France.

Being an ex-fire engine it has never had a tacho. The speedo on it is a cable drive affair with just the cable drive and a 4 pin connector for lights etc… So I THINK I’m now on the lookout for a 24v cable drive tacho if such a thing exists. My main question is whether this was the normal arrangement on a 2 series scania, or did they have a separate sender unit and more normal analogue head? There are so few around now it’s hard to find out!

If anyone has any potentially useful parts to help with this for modest prices then feel free to PM me. cheers for any advice

My first thought is that if a vehicle is having a tach fitted for the
first time,[for whatever reason] it’ll need a current brand new digi-tach.

Having said that, there may be exemptions for historic/older vehicles beyond a certain age.

As this is a 1986 truck I think I’m fine on that one. Thanks for the thought though.

Will be either Veeder Root or Lucas Kienzle which you should be able to get from a tachograph station that is not tied to a manufacturer,Then you will need a output gearbox and cable.Try ringing Ribblesdale Autos in Preston they keep some old tacho gear.

THanks. I was hoping that it would be possible to use the current cable drive for the speedo, having seen some (12v) cable drive tacho’s on flea bay. Oh well.
So it sounds like I ‘just’ need to find the correct sender for the gearbox, a matching tachograph and the right cable between them. (leaving aside 24v feed, back light feed etc.) Do I have that right?

Most tachos(of this age) are 24v for the illumination and the clock, the cable is just an ordinary bowden cable like on an old car speedo and the gearbox is just a wee thing that bolts to the gearbox output drive and matches the ratios of the gearbox out put and the tacho head.Saved the manufacturers making a different tacho head for each vehicle.
good luck.Would be nice to see an old series 2 back on the road.

Sounds like you could need what they call a generator which turns a spinning cable in to electrical pulse.

You can get the bits from here and you can then install a relatively abundant cd player/radio cassette style analogue tachograph head.

As I’m sure you’re aware you’ll still need to get it sealed and calibrated somewhere VOSA approved so if you’re thinking of doing self-install you’ll need to liase with whatever tacho centre you’re going to use. Bear in mind though tacho places vary wildly on pricing and their ability to cope with unusual vehicles/jobs.

What part of the country are you?

Thanks for the idea, so you a suggesting that I stick a universal transducer on the existing speedo cable and that then gives me a standard connection to any modern tachograph?

Yep I know I need to find a friendly tacho place for calibration etc. i’'m on a shoe string otherwisie I’d make this whole installation someone elses problem! I’m in Carlisle area.

Try asking Duncans tachograph centre out the longtown road if you’re in carlisle area.
