Thanks for the post Big Truck and in particular the link, a very insightful read, the one thing that everyone’s told me, from the don’t do it boys to the loads of work at Dove and Buxton lot, is that your face has to fit. It’s a shame I’ve got to move, don’t get me wrong driving Steel around all day is crap and the wages in the Steel industry are worse but I’m not shy of work and have never been a grass is greener bloke, to be fair over the years it’s done what I’ve needed it to do. I’ll keep my options open but even if I end up door knocking with a C.V. in hand, something will drop.
Dont no if its of any help but i rung quite a few tipper haulage companies looking (begging) for work last week and the general answer was a big NO maybe its because i am new and they saw through the fact i aint got a truck or even a trailer yet come to think of it but other than one offering back loads and another saying he will try me out it was a case of forget it we cant keep us own busy

Like others have said, if you can I would leave it for at least a year or 2 until the economy picks up.
If the quarry’s are busy…check out why…Is there a big project on that could end soon?
I say that because I had a loverly class 2 tipper job down here in Cornwall. The “Big” job finished (A30 Gossmoor) 2 weeks later I was redundant. At the same time all the other tipper firms were laying off the extra people they had taken on for the 2 years of the job so they wern’t taking on.
If you do decide to go for it…just get yourself a cheapie. If the worst comes to the worst, you (hopefully) won’t lose to much on it if it does go ■■■■ up.
Also (if you can) try and avoid having to put the truck in their colours…it might make things easier if things do go a bit quiet to find other work

2 QUESTIONS ON THIS ARTICLE. I doubt any one will have the answers, but opinions will do.

If the hauliers in this article are suffering thru lack of work, who is doing they’re share?

Wouldn’t they’re work dropping off have something to do with the down turn? Not because of TDG takin on transport ?
My take on this is that TDG were taken on essentially to reduce costs for Aggregate Industries - they can call it “improved efficiency” or “reduced empty miles” or whatever they like but at the end of the day it’s to reduce the cost. Give this it’s inevitable that the subbies who actually do the work are going to lose out, as if they can reduce empty running etc. then they will of course need less wagons. Any subcontractor who thought for a second that getting TDG in to run it would be beneficial for them really did have the wool pulled over their eyes.
Plus, as Mr V said in the post above, their industry sector has been hit pretty hard by the recession anyway, so even without TDG’s involvement many of them would have found themselves with no work to do.
