Numpty techie question for the anoraks

Hi everone.
I just need to know the best way to edit and format my own thread offline. My intention is to do an on going thread and rather than chuck stuff on willy nilly and confuse people whats happnin. For example i like the jazzandy and some of the middle east posts.
So any of you regular posters can give me some pointers it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I don’t think it quite works that way. The thing is, the moment you post something on ‘your’ new thread there is no way of predicting who will respond to your posts, or in what way. Some posters go off at a tangent and put in info and pics that have little to do with your post, but nonetheless your post reminded them of it! Some people think of an angle you’d never considered, or you simply didn’t know about. In other words, this forum is completely organic, like a conversation in the pub - it can’t be planned, structured or contained.

Nonetheless, you can help things along by getting the START right. I have created dozens of threads on here, many of them specialist themes such as the ERF ones. The secret, IMHO, is to prepare what you want to say in the first few posts, on a Word Doc and have that ready to cut and paste. Then line up all your pictures in clusters of about five or so, and number them if necessary in folders on your laptop. Then wait till about 2:00 in the morning when it’s really quiet and your initial posts are unlikely to be interrupted with non-sequiturs . In this way, you can then effortlessly and in a relaxed manner, concentrate on placing all your material on your newly created thread.

After that you just have to ‘farm’ the thread. That is to say, acknowledge some of the early replies, enter into the ensuing discussions, add any new material - and then sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labours.

I hope that helps a little! Robert

Cheers Rob…if you think of owt else stick in on eer. Will study what you said in more detail whem sat at pc at night.

Hey Lancy boy got miself a bob the builder need me beam next week.nip round wen ur passin cha.dont mention this thread to anyone down under!!

Taxibear, what I would say is, if you are going to post quite a bit of text to tell a story then try and ensure your spelling is correct and your text is in easily readable paragraphs say in blocks of 7 to 8 lines that end and start in a logical way. There have been many excellent stories or tales of the road on here but some have been spoilt by poor grammar or layout that can sometimes confuse the reader. I know spelling in particular isn’t that hot for some but a quick check of a dictionary soon sorts that or use the spellchecker in the Word programme when you do your rough type. You don’t have to be an experienced writer but one or two simple rules can make your posts interesting and hold the readers attention.

Written above is typical of a paragraph of text I would use, a paragraph breaks up the text into readable groups otherwise it would be a mass of words on the page that can easily lose the reader. Try to leave a space between paragraphs as I’ve done here. A paragraph is handy too when you want to change the direction of the story you are telling, for instance a paragraph telling the end of a days journey and a new one starting the next days tale, it just helps to make it logical. A sentence can be kept short or long, providing you have said what you want to in the sentence and a long sentence can be broken up just as I’ve done here by using a comma or the word ‘and’. Leave a space after a comma and two spaces after a full stop.

I’ve used two sentences at the end of the last paragraph, one long and the other short but they have both said what I wanted to put over without adding any extra unnecessary wording that might not be in the same context as the main part of the sentence. Of course there is much more to writing a book or story if it’s intended to be a professional piece of work, punctuation can be a mind numbingly difficult subject to understand but I’m sure members on this site will forgive any errors as long as the subject matter is interesting. I hope these few small rules will help in what you have to post if you decide to use them. Good luck with your work. Cheers Franky.

Franky thanks for taking the time to write all that explanation.(what have Ì started?)
I think this is going to be classed as a long term project. Somewhere between This is your life and the Magna Carta!
I had a look through my stuff pictures, diaries etc. It starts 1984 up to around 2007 but there will be a lot of boring stuff I can cut out.
It would be easier to just read posts and stick my oar in when it suits me and shove a pic here and theer.
The problem would be I would get carried away and end up hijacking the OP thread . I will have a think about things and work out a strategy.
Between you and Robert I have plenty of pointers.
It could be sometime before I am back.
Don’t wait up!
Thanks again for yer input.

As you ARE the OP you can hardly be accused of hijacking your own thread! Robert
