Number plates in windscreen

What is or is not allowed ? everyone keeps saying “within the swept area” but what if they jam their name plates just under the area where the windscreen wipers are ? or have their “stuff” in the arc the windscreen wiper misses?

I think the key is just don’t take the ■■■■. Mine is in middle of screen sat on bottom of screen. Been stopped many a time by VOSA and they’ve never mentioned it.

The legal position (Construction & Use Regulations) is that “All glass or other transparent material fitted to a motor vehicle shall be maintained in such condition that it does not obscure the vision of the driver while the vehicle is being driven on a road.”

VOSA rules (as applied in MoT testing) are that damage, stickers etc must not extend beyond an area larger than 10mm in diameter in “Zone A” of the windscreen (i.e. a 290mm wide section of the swept area, directly in front of the driver), or 40mm diameter anywhere else in the swept area. But tax discs, parking permits etc are specifically allowed under VOSA rules.

I have mine attached to my dash table not had a problem

One of the lads at my last job got pulled and was told that if the plate is in the top of the windscreen then that is ok.

Do you mean a name plate, or actually having the vehicle number plate in the windscreen (as if it’s fallen off it’s usual holding place)?

I read it as the latter tbh, which I think as long as it’s clearly visable and it’s being done as a temporary option, till it can be re attached to the front, then it’s better than not having one at all.

I’ve been given a VDRS for having the actual number plate in the window albeit on a car not a lorry. Not sure about name plates mine’s in the screen and it’ll stay there til MOT

Blimey, that must be the shortest least pompous post you’ve ever written, bravo Happy, bravo.

I haven’t got one so I’ve never been stopped by the tacky police…
