Sounds like was infected with a virus and a load of spyware.

Get it to your local PC repair person and they may be able
to do something for you.

Try taking it back to a previous restore point, have you got a virus control programme and firewall on it?

Could be a candidate for format and re-install of the operating system if the infection (Assumption) has done as much damage as you say. Be aware this means a clean wipe of the hard drive.
Microsoft Security Essentials is free and gets good reviews.
Malwarebytes Antimalware is also very good (and free) and will not clash with other malware treatments, just remember to run a scan with it now and again.
Browser, I use Firefox with “No Script” extension. This stops pop-ups and any animations and Java unless you give the site the OK.

BTW What operating system do you use, browser and Email client?

Best of luck
Tony

Just thought, Is the hard drive going down?
Run scandisk/ chkdsk and do a complete scan (Surface scan) this will check the disk for bad sectors and if bad sectors start appearing , the disk is going down.
But before you do, see if the disk is full, that can do silly things. Disk cleanup in the “System Tools” folder will give you some elbow room then follow up with a defrag

As stated, probably a virus but :arrow_right:
When did you last defrag or clean your hard drive?

If you know what you are doing you could try

Windows XP

Run Regedit (start > run and type regedit)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\1\Desktop
Try and get into Bags\1 - but you may get an ‘Error on opening’ message, if so get into permissions and reset including the ‘owner’ tab.
Import a copy of another computers bags\1 settings.
Make sure the icons are how you want them positioned and reboot.

Windows Vista

Try Icons Restore http://users.rcn.com/taylotr/icon_restore.html

###################################################################################
Windows 2000 unlikely but try

Regedit (start > run and type regedit)
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer.
Right-click in the right pane and select New, DWORD Value name it NoSaveSettings and now press the Enter key.
Right-click the NoSaveSettings item and select Modify. Enter 1 in the Value data box.
Then reboot.

If you need a re-installation this shouldn’t cost more than £75, make sure they test the drive first (takes less than a minute).
Some of them will do an install, it will then last a week! you will take it back at they will try and charge you for another driver and another installation :exclamation:

Yipeeee, got my pc sorted  . A very kind freind of mine came forward & apparently knew someone who could sort the pc out for me  , that was a hudge relief 'cos I dont know the first anything about computors at all   , but apparently it had got a lot of viruses on it. Even though it had antivirus protection on it it still ended up with gremlins in the system  :unamused: :unamused: , so they have very kindly done all sorts of sorting things out & resetting things back on it , & its up & working again now  , & that is so fantastic 'cos without one I’m realy stuck !!! I have just plugged it infor the first time tonight on my return home with it & its working a lot faster & better than it ever did before    so i’m well pleased with that. Cheers everyone

Pleased for you,

did they manage to recover all your lost documents and pictures before they fixed the PC?, if not you may still be able to get them back if they haven’t been overwritten yet, most private computer shops can do it in store for a small fee.

I think my photos are still on there, I recall seeing them breifly  but I have mislaid them again  somewhere   . Luckily I had printed some photo copies of various stuff so I’m hoping that I can retrack some of the previous information without too much hasstle, & I can then sort out my favorites toolbar again. Dunno where my music went - I’ll keep looking :unamused: :unamused: ., it’s probably here somewhere !! . I think it’s deffo going to be a job for my next day off , I’m just so glad it’s up & running & sorted
