Not truck related....

But there are a few clued up chaps on here who might enlighten me…

A friend is visiting me from Belgium in a few weeks time and he is leaving his very nice car with me while he goes to the TT for a few days. He has told me and the wife to get ourselves out in it while hes in the I.O.M. Now the question is, is it ok for me to use a car with Belgian plates? I realise I will need insurance, but whats the law on using a foreign registered vehicle?

Cheers.

Its a Morgan by the way!!

Just phone your insurance company and ask them as you certainly want to be covered.

Nothing wrong with using it as long as you are covered by insurance, its getting cover on it that might be the issue as it’s not UK registered. Phone a broker as apose to the usual suspects and see what they say, i’ll bet it won’t be worth it for a day or 2

I wouldn’t have thought it would be a problem if you’re insured and have the owners permission. Maybe get the owners permission in writing though just to have something to show if stopped as its on foreign plates and he’s going to be in the IOM and maybe difficult to contact.

Never driven a Morgen but sounds like it could be fun if the weather is right.

Check with the owner, he may be on an any driver type policy. The plates won’t be a problem I reckon.

Seek advice mate from your insurance Co, it may be that you are indeed already covered. I spent a week at my mates house in Spain last month and he left me a car to use during the day whilst he was at work, I queried the legalities of this re insurance and he told me that in Spain it is the vehicle that is insured, so anyone with the relavant licence is automatically insured too. It may well be the case with your mates car too.

you might be better if he puts you on his insurance rather than you putting the car on your insurance. oh nice car.

Im shocked at the car pal,its a beauty ,what is it 5litre v8

You can’t drive it, its a temporary import and as a UK citizen, you have to pay road tax and UK insurance.
Your mate or any other foreigner can drive it for 6 month if he has no residency here.
Rental car companies have a special license for this.

Yes mate, 5 litre V8. Truth is it sounds awesome, looks awesome, but is bloody horrible to drive! Extremely uncomfortable and handles like a bathtub half full of water. It tried to kill me a few times but I forgave it everytime I drove past a shop window.
