Not sure if correct forum to ask on

Thinking of giving up driving and developing a business I have had on the side for a few years. I would like to convert a 7.5t box Lorry as a retail unit with temp living accommodation.

Only transporting my own stock. Do I need an o license. What other things do I have to be aware of.

Might be better placed on the owner operators forum.

if it’s classed as a mobile shop, then probably not.

Sounds like youd at least need a Restricted licence which allows the carriage of own account goods. The truly knowledgeable guys will be along soon, Im sure!

Yes, you will need a restricted.

7.5t probably not the best choice but even 3.5t trailers aren’t without redtape and will need tacho, at least.

If you’re going for 7.5t might as well go even bigger really.

Need to trade out of the unit so size is restricting

Bloke used to drive around the estates selling sweets, crisps, veg etc. Just a mobile shop.
There is no way he would have got away with a 7.5t, he used an 18t and managed the back streets fine.

Back in the day ‘n’ all that

Pitch fees are horrendous size matters

Things like snap-on trucks get away with it weight-wise because a lot of stuff isn’t that big and they can regularly replenish. Don’t know what you intend to do but if it’s a scenario where you need to take enough stock to last a whole bank holiday weekend or more plus fixtures and fittings the weight will easily clock up.

Old mobile library might be a good shout as they have a lot of stuff fitted like night-heater, hot water sink and shelving already. Stick an awning on one side and away you go.

I do think it would be quite easy to ■■■■ a weekends profits, and more, away if your long in the tooth lorry craps itself at the side of the road and needs recovery.
