Just called one the agencies I’m with who had work on the local bins. In another thread I was told to ask if I’m guaranteed a minimum of 8 hours per shift. I asked this and was told flatly “No”. I thought they were legally required to pay for 8 hours per shift or am I barking up the wrong tree?

No-one is guaranteed squat fella … its all down to what agreement (contract ) be it written or verbal ( I prefer written even if its a simple text message) is made between A. said agency and B you the worker but I for one only work for a minimum 8hrs as as soon as you start work the 24hr clock is in play an you can bet the agency is charging the client enough …
Normally this wouldn’t phase me as most of my jobs are 8 hours plus but from what I can gather bin work is job and knock. For only 7.50 an hour I want 8+ hours.

that’s the problem as you say its JAK but you can be sure the normal guys are paid 8 min … I wouldn’t do anything not paying an 8 min.
When I did agency 20yrs worth I refused anything that they offered that was quoted as anything under 8 … if your turning it down fair play for sticking to your guns, the sooner others realise this the better …

Give it a crack. If you find yourself off home after 6 hours then politely explain to the agency that your not impressed and don’t wish to do the bins again, unless they pay you 8 hours. You never know, you might be able to get 8 hours in easily.

Minimum 8 hours isn’t a legal requirement but it’s what you should expect from an agency.
Personally I wouldn’t do a job unless I was guaranteed 8 hours, but then I’m lucky I don’t need to.
I thought job and knock was pretty much finished on the bins now, or is that just in my area

I know in our area they tend to JAK but then I know the lads could be sent to cover if a motor goes down etc

Leave well alone if they aren’t paying a minimum of eight because if you do it once, they’ll expect it again.
If it’s job and finish then the lads you are working with will not appreciate it (to say the least) if you are minded to make the day last for eight hours when they’re normally done in six, and will have no compunction about making their feelings clear to you. A lose-lose for you is what the whole situation sounds like to me.
So not to bother with this then?

I would negotiate a rate and min hours after all it could be an ongoing thing

You are playing from a position of strength, explain to the agency that you are only prepared to do any work where you are guaranteed a minimum of 8 hours. When they say yes ask them to confirm it in writing as they will lie otherwise.
On my rider I would also ask for blue smarties, soft toilet paper and some nice carpet slippers too.

Depends on whether or not you need the work, if you need this job go for it, but if you can find alternative work where you will earn a full days pay go for that.

Don’t become a “filler” for them unless you are desperate.
I did a couple of weeks on the bins and it was great (loads of perks if doing town centre shops) the round was carefully arranged to pick up the crew en route and then we would collect from bakers 08:00 ish for free sausage rolls then the chippy at lunchtime etc etc. The only thing that annoyed the crew was that I was not allowed to operate the ejector thingy at the tip so one of them had to come with me instead of extended lunch hour.
i did a stint on the bins many years ago and we used to pick up shops rubbish for back handers : ) there was plenty of perks in them days

Doesn’t seem that way. He made no effort to try and tempt me to agree to this job.
Just seen another posting on Driver Hire for a compactor wagon role running out of Metheringham where I used to live. £8.25 an hour according to the post.

that’s why I said negotiate rate and min hours I’ve found the bin game to be normally long term… a chap I knew went on the house bins all he did was drive, that was the agreement with his crew they got off early all he did was drive, he loved it .

They way he was talking to me there was no room for negotiation. His loss though, there is plenty of work out there. 5 minutes of Google Fuu later I found another bin job in the same village my mums in for an extra £1 an hour. Going to call tomorrow and ask for more details.
Says on the bottom of my daily time sheets something along the lines of I will be paid all the hours ( ) authorised on the time sheet by signature of the TM or person I report to in the morning/afternoon and a minimum of 8 hours.
so say if i was to do 8 hours, take off 45 mins it reduces to 7hrs 15 mins, I would still be paid 8 hours
