Hello all, been driving C+E now for a year as of last week and at the moment got a new Stralis on the way…
Now i’ve been going to t’fest for years and thought now i drive them, be great to take the truck up to the show.
Been rattling to couple drivers and i know drivers talk differs sometimes to whats real and not so real
So i’m just curious, as to what the law is regarding driving not for hire or reward to soemthing like truckfest, especially on digitach… if though its allowed? as im not driving the vehicle for work/pay…
If its going to be too much of a pain i wont bother, but always nice to seek advice!

You have to use the tacho and abide by all the same rules as normal I’m afraid. There are no exemptions for private use on anything over 7.5t any more. Of course if you had a full weekly rest the weekend before then you can get away with only taking 24h the weekend of the show so if you go late friday or early saturday you can easily get your 24h in before you head home on sunday.
One of the changes that came in on 11th April 2006 was the reclassification of ‘private use.’
Basically, private use now only applies to non commercial carriage (please note this is not the same as ‘hire and reward’) for vehicles where the maximum permitted mass (including trailer) is 7.5 tonnes or less. If it’s greater, then the driving to ‘Truckfest’ will be counted with all the other driving that week / fortnight, you cannot count the journey there or back as ‘weekly rest.’ Although nothing to stop you having your weekly rest at the show.
The only exemption to this is a vehicle that is more than 25 years old, so expect to see loads of ERF’s from a Yorkshire supermarket there…oops, did I really write that
