its about time we went to a 4m overall height and got rid of these stupid double deckers.
we would still get tossers hitting bridges no doubt.

Don’t be silly now, that would mean more vehicles, trailers, drivers, fuel and road tax, resulting in more duty, vat (on fuel and the invoice), paye taxes and ni contributions. Why would the government want that

just strange we follow like little lost lambs every other EU law yet 4m to go abroad but in the UK we allow these stupid double deck trailers daily, to me they should be limited to inter depot trunking no stores or anything.
The obvious answer is for the cab to automatically rise up to the same height as the trailer. You wouldn’t hit a bridge if it was coming at you at eye level!
There’s thousands of lorry drivers going about their work every day at around the 16’ mark and higher, they don’t hit bridges nor turn the soddin things over, they’ve been doing this for as long as lorries have been around and bridges and trees have existed.
That’s because they are…pause for tuneful trumpetting…lorry drivers.
Lorry drivers don’t bash bridges…end of line.
chuff me. ive only been driving wagons since august. but its already ingrained in me to panic check my height check the briddge height check my height check the bridge height decide that im smaller than the bridge check both heights again just in case then compulsivly duck as i go under the bridge. then check my height.
how do people do it?

So you’re the Bent and Mangled driver in question then? Not sure how you can defend anyone who hits a bridge.

How do you work that out it’s nothing to do with self righteous at all, it’s to do with doing the job you are paid for in a professional/correct way.
Knock Stobart as much as people want but there is a check list for every trailer they pick up and one of the questions is height of trailer!! I pull a lot of different height trailers and will measure it if I’ve not used it before.
Make a note in notebook (you do have one?) Then crack on easy life.
Noddy question time - why are some bridges marked with a warning height, and some with a prohibition height? In both cases there’s a physical height that will go under and a height which won’t, so why don’t we have just one standard sign, saying anything over this height, ■■■■ off?

Dude seriously, you went down the Mr predictable route of it being me!! Sorry to disappoint, I’ve also never hit a bridge. I did ■■■■ my head standing up in 1 of only 2 flat top premiums on the fleet whilst mine was in for service once though.
I’m not defending hitting a bridge, I’m just anti all the ■■■■■■■■ being spouted by people with short memories, you might not have hit a bridge, but it’s a safe bet each and anyone on here has ■■■■■■ up several times. And the usual reply is…yeah but I’ve never hit a bridge.
No amount of training, passing tests, doing something as a profession, etc, will stop people making mistakes and having lapses of concentration. You’re deluded if you think otherwise.
I know to lock my front door, I’ve done it since I was a kid, but once or twice I’ve somehow managed to forget it, but I didn’t get burgled, I got away with and that’s the case with most of our ■■■■ ups, we get away with them, don’t think you’re smarter than the guy who got burgled the one time he forgot to lock his front door.
I’ve left my baby gate open once or twice too, but I got away with it, would the threat of my kids being taken away from me for 12 months meant I’d of took more care to ensure I didn’t forget? Maybe I’m not a proper dad? Because that’s the thing with ■■■■ ups, you don’t look at the consequences and decided to ■■■■ up or not.
And I’m not talking about someone who jumps in a truck, who’s no interest in knowing how high his trailer is or any low bridges on route and is an accident waiting to happen. I’m talking about the average good driver who’s ■■■■■■ up and didn’t get away with it.
Next time you ■■■■ up, whether you get away with it or not, think back to your attitude on this post
Stevie mate, I’ve ■■■■ up many a time like the rest of us, but a driver hitting a bridge is the mother of all ■■■■ ups in driving a truck I reckon, a cut above a ■■■■ up, another step up.
Say what you like mate, but I can not see how it happens, it’s page 1 day 1 stuff, all hgv drivers should have it drummed into them, until it becomes second nature …like checking mirrors (yeh I know )
As I said in my case I , as I’m sure many others do, notice even when driving a car, but if that makes me ‘holier than thou’ in your eyes, so be it mate, I can’t help that.
