My first job was a a Breadman Mothers Pride at Skerton Road Old Trafford, we drove Commer Karriers, long nosed Morris Austins, Custom cabs and threepenny bit cabs FG series 1965-1968. I worked for Smiths of Eccles from 1968-1972. Boss, Sammy Nield had taken me on. They were based at Taylors Road Urmston Manchester. I started on an old Bedford then progressed to luxury an ERF A series. 1972-1974 I worked for Williames Transport Group, Warren Road Trafford Park. They were an Irish Groupage company. The vans were Ford Custom cabs 15 tonners, the tractor units were 32 tonners AEC Mandaters Irish reg plates. We used to travel from Fishguard to Rosslare. Stranraer to Larne. 1974 I worked for MAT Transport MIFT Trafford Park. This was part of Brinks MAT. This was container and Tilt work. Most of my nights out were at Hull depot. 1975-1982 was at Humko Products (Kraft Foods) Westinghouse Road Trafford Park. Tanker work, delivery of hot edible oils throughout the UK and southern Ireland. 1982-1985 I worked for Smith and Robinson Taylors Road Urmston; this was Tanker work, Chemicals. This was the elite for pay, conditions and fantastic bunch of drivers. I moved to Norfolk 1985 working for the Ministry of Defence as a Mechanical Transport Flight Specialist (Lorry Driver) based at RAF Marham. visited Sardinia, Germany, Italy, normally working with the Tornado squadrons on exercise which could be a few weeks at a time. These were the best days of my driving career. I retired 2004, still live in Norfolk. My wife said to me I should keep those wheels turning even in retirement. She has put me in charge of the Hoover! and wheelbarrow!.

What about Ernest Kidd, aka, Kidds Transport,my stepdad would have been his first driver back in the 50"S,When he operated out of a field at burrow near Kirkby lonsdale,We dont have any photos from those days but i drove for him from 1988 to 2005 then moved to Canada but have a nephew who drives for them now!!

my dad left school in 1959 & went mating at sammy scotts he was second man to bob cole (knew the job backwards) who drove a four wheel aec & trailer fleet number 32,he left there & went mating at walter pooles in about 1962 were he mated a driver called teddy flynn another top driver who knew the job backwards teddy drove this mercury from new it had a little 13ft trailer bought from j.w.lees brewery,it used to do 2 trips a week to richmond surrey for a company called halstead tiles from whitefield (still trading today) the wagon was called yogy bear & the trailer was called booboo,in this pic it was being made up for the oldham carnival & polished by tony durose.

Growing up in the 70’s outside Manchester I regularly used to hear the guy up the road who worked for Sudlows Carriers leaving in the early hours in his Foden S80 - a joy to be woken up as he had to change down just as he passed our house!! As part of my dads job with the Manchester Ship Canal he had to liaise with their transport arm , Bridgewater Transport Services and I would be taken along on a Saturday morning to be given free run of the yard - ERF A and B series, Atki Borderers, Fodens and joy of joys those new fangled Ford Transcontinentals - some of the 1st in the country if I remember rightly. As an under 10 year old it seemed a long way to the ground from the cab of one of those. I also remember that they had two Volvo F86’s, the only foreign wagons owned and they were bought for a specific contract, Kellogs, and painted in Kellogs red and white with blower trailers. Any one got any pics of Bridgewater I would love to see- the company used to give me official photos but they have been lost over the years
