Got a copy of the above for Christmas (signed by the author as a bonus too!)
Have to say it was a brilliant read (finished by the 27th much to the annoyance of the other half!)
I recognise a few of the contributors names from on here so just wanted to say thanks for a great read.
Well worth a read for anyone else. The only downside with my connections being there was only a tiny mention of R.G. Bassett & Sons. Otherwise it was great though, plenty of 60s,70s and 80s wagons too.

Hiya …i’ve spoken to a few people who say theres a 2nd book to follow after the good response to the 1st book, maybe bassetts
will have a bigger mention
I had a visit from the author/ess,Ros Unwin a few weeks ago to give her some info on the firms I worked for that weren’t mentuioned in the first book that she intends putting into book two.
There may be some updated info on the original book.
She was interested that I was working for Vic Wild as one of his “Owner drivers” when he fell out with Gardners when they went on strike and he couldn’t get any more 240’s,so told Gardners to shove 'em,and he bought 3 new DAF 2600’s of which I had the first.
Since then,my mind has been going back to even before I started driving.
When I was at school in the mid '50’s in Newcastle,I used to walk home to Siverdale at the end of the day.A shop owner in Siverdale, her husband used to drive a red Bedford four wheel tipper carrying coal from Newcastle to Crewe, and occasionally he picked me up and gave me a ride to Crewe and back.
This is where I struggle to remember the name of the firm, but I’ve a feeling it was Rutland Transport.
Anyone else from this era remember this or can add anything?
Can someone tell me where to get a copy please, although not quite 50 and living in Buxton I was born and bred in Sneyd Green and remember many of the firms around in the early-mid seventies.
Further you enquiry re Rutland Transport, I have spoken to my 84 year old Uncle who has been a lorry mechanic in Stoke on Trent all his life. Who told me that Rutland Transport were Arthur Rutland Transport, their yard was in Corporation Street, Stoke. They ran Bedfords, ERF’s and a Proctor. They had tippers and flats and did work from Warrington Wire to the Black Country. They had approximately 10 motors. Two drivers names he can remember are Ray Swindells & Tom Ward. He seems to think that they did not get nationalised. Hope this is helpful.
