Lost, stolen or malfunctioning driver cards
Digital tachograph cards have passed all relevant International Organization for Standardization (ISO) qualified tests and security certification requirements. They are designed to work reliably and securely for their period of validity but, like all smart cards, can be damaged by abuse. Take care of your driver card – treat it as if it were a credit card and do not subject it to excessive force, bending or extremes of temperature.
Where it is impossible to use a driver card (e.g. where it has been lost, stolen or damaged or is malfunctioning) a driver may drive without the card for a maximum of 15 calendar days (or longer if this is necessary for the vehicle to be returned to its premises) provided that he produces 2 printouts – one at the start of the day and another at the end so long as there is no change of vehicle. Where there is a change of vehicle then a printout will need to be taken at the start and end of the use of vehicle 1 and then a printout at the start and end of vehicle 2 and so on. All printouts must be marked with:
the driver’s name or driver card or licence number, so the driver can be identified
any manual entries needed to show periods of other work, availability, and rest or break
the driver’s signature
The driver must report the problem to DVLA and apply for a new card within seven calendar days.

A flashing tacho light is the least of your problems mate.
Do 2 print outs of each then the do the following .
Start of day
Do printout and manual entry ( write name and licence number or digi card number and end of daily rest + any work completed up to this point) do this 2 times, 1 for you and 1 for the office.
Next, continue to use the tacho as normal ie press mode selection for activitys.
At the end of the day again do 2 printouts 1 for you 1 for the office and again put on the back name etc and manual lines for work not covered followed by a line to show star of daily / weekly rest.
Next day you do the same as all above.
So each day you will have 4 print outs 2 for you to keep and 2 for the office.
Get a stapler and put the 2 you need into a diary this record needs to be kept for 28 Callander days ,
I just leave mine in the diary .

To stop the unit flashing all day you can put it in Out Of Scope mode. It will still record your daily activities for you to do your print outs.
Press OK scroll to Input Unit and click OUT.

That would also record all his activities as out of scope which would be a breach of the regs in … Incorrect record keeping which would be an offence comparable as tipping whilst on POA etc
And if his card was in it would be a problem. But it isn’t. The print out will look exactly the same except it will say OUT at the start of his shift. The rest will look identical should anyone wish to check what he’s done.
Safer than being distracted by that annoying flashing all day.
