I am assuming you have a bunk in the cab as that will be the hardest bit to blag.
ibson:
Yes, it’s called a split daily rest period. One rest consisting of at least 3 hours and one of at least 9.
Someone correct me if I’m wrong.
Yes, youre’ right, but on digi tacho I will put “end of duty” twice a day, so it will show every activity as separate working day, I was worried if that would be any issue…

Could I do it like that 2 hours work, 11 hours sleep, 2 hours work, 9 hours sleep… Therefore doing two shifts in one day?Could I then work, say, 12 shifts per week?

I’ll correct you then ibson
It is perfectly possible and legal orys, but it’s not a split daily rest period as ibson suggested, it’s simply a series of very short shifts!

If my gaffer insisited that I put it on bed whilst waiting around then sorry the answer would be either “NO” as I am not free to dispose of my time as I want too, or "ok boss but i’m off to do some shopping/sight seeing, give me a call when they want me back "
That argument isn’t valid as to be legal as break you do not need to be able to freely dispose of your time, the time must simply be used exclusively for rest/recuperation. You can legally have a break at a time when you are required to remain in your cab. It is only if you want it to count as rest that you have to be able to freely dispose of your time. That was the point of my first reply on this thread, break and rest have different requirements and yet both are recorded with the same symbol on the tacho.

So I can do 12 shifts per week and noone will have any problem with that?

Yep, as long as you start your weekly rest no more than 144 hours after you finished the last one you can do as many shifts as you like inbetween.
Paul
I’m not so sure… I think if you had 3 hours rest, then 9 or anything over it would be classed as a split daily rest, not 2 shifts, regardless of whether you took your card out or not, it’s so long as its within 24 hours.
I do agree with what people say above, you shouldn’t go on break unless you are on break.
That said I’m sure there are plenty of drivers who put it on break while loading/unloading so they can crack on, maybe a few owner drivers…

As it happens with orys’ example above the two “shifts” do fit into 24h and so you could probably count it as either. Whichever way you look at it, it is still legal and you could still repeat the pattern six times between weekly rests and remain legal.
However if you change the pattern to 3h on 11h off 3h on 9h off, for example, you can’t get two into 24h and so it can’t be a split rest and so you would in effect be doing 11 short shifts between each weekly rest period (not 12 as in orys’ example as you couldn’t fit that pattern 6 times into 144h).

Well Paul, I don’t like split rest periods! There isn’t enough time to get settled and sleep, id be hard pushed to get a good fap in there.
Does anyone use the word fap here? I’m not sure, so just in case: urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Fap
some good points here guys by the way work was not telling anyone to crack on and do another shift it just came up in a conversation and everyone had there own answer
Did you get paid for 26 hours you were at work never mind the rules .

I don’t think there was any confusion, he was asking, if you did it the way you suggested, did you get paid through the ‘rest’ period or docked it.
I agree with him, it would’ve helped sway my decision - “you’re docking me for waiting for a load?? Nah, I’ll carry on then and have my 11hrs off”…
