If you just want something cheap and cheerful just in case you get stuck on a night out but don’t do them regularly then tesco do sleeping bags starting from £12.
Yes, a sleeping bag can be used as a quilt. I’m used to a double bed, so have a tendency to roll off the poxy beds in trucks. Sleeping bag all the way.
Take kitchen roll, not bog roll. Kill 2 birds with one stone!

hi I’m starting to do nights out what’s best quilt or a sleeping bag?Do you kip in a bag at home??
So there’s the answer.![]()

1 step above ‘‘Which sat nav’’ I reckon.
Am I getting old, less tolerant or both.
I’d go for both
These questions might seem obvious to those of us who have done this for a year or two, but for somebody new to this it might all seem a bit mysterious, and maybe trucknet has replaced asking round the yard or learning the ropes by spending your school holidays out with your dad or in my case my brother.
And I’m sure despite that experience we all asked a few questions which had the old hands either tutting at our ignorance or having good laugh at our expense.
Personally I use a king size duvet folded over, but for many years I used sleeping bags, used to go hill walking and climbing so had the kit anyway, amazing how much adapted easily to nights out, although never really found a use for the carabiners and harness, but these days probably need them to get on the trailer.
Duvet from a charity shop for a fiver, when it starts to get offensive just bin it off and get another. Wouldn’t bother with a decent one from home, its ganna get oil and muck on it sooner or later

I know mate, I know, but come on ffs
, I mean what’s next ?..Do I wear pyjamas, Who packs your lunch your Mam or yourself? Do I brush my teeth when tramping?
Ok, seriously good luck to the lad and all that with his tramping, I do mean that!, and he SHOULD ask for advice, he can even pm me for it (if I haven’t put him off ) but watch out for cynical, seasoned and yeh ok…old (er
) intolerant truckers when he’s asking advice outside, and ffs think about what he’s asking in case he makes a ■■■■ of himself.

Why buy a used one (ugh ) when you can pick up a decent one from Asda cheap enough.
Oil and muck? … Put a duvet cover on and stick it in washing machine every weekend…(and/or get a shower before going for a kip.and don’t kip in your work gear and boots.

The answer one would expect from a tramp, One of the soap dodgers you see all to often, who have one set of clothes to wear all week. Eat and sleep in them

Perhaps there should be a sticky in Newbie section, Rob answers your questions, but if he thinks you’re a total Wozak he’ll tell you in no uncertain terms. However he is doing this for your own benefit, as it’s the treatment you’ll get when you ask some old school haulage boss or drivers a stupid question.

Hey!..That sounds good mate, an '‘Ask Rob’ section, a kind of unsympathetic samaritan section for newbies. …I like your style.
Would I be paid for it at all??
Up until recently I’d been tramping for about 20 years, and I’ll hold my hand up and confess when first starting I’d got the basics, an old army artic grotbag that stunk, my old peak stove and a small pan, couldn’t cook inside because of the fumes so my scran was cooked either on the back of flat under a make do lean to fashioned out of the strap box lid. or under the truck.
In my last truck, I’d got a fitted mattress cover and on top of that I had a really thin duvet in a cover which was my mattress topper, I also had 2 other duvets a tog 10 and a 15, depending on where I’d be travelling to and the weather I’d be sorted, if it was hot then just a spare duvet cover, if it was freezing cold Scandinavia then I’d have both duvets.
My truck was also kitted out with microwave and coffee maker so no need for dragging ■■■■■■■■■ of gear I wasn’t going to use, although I always carried a small camping stove and pan just in case.
I refused to sleep in a lay-by and even if it meant me paying out of my own pocket I’d park in a services or truckstop.

Good answer.
In another era there would have been suggestions about harnesses and carabiners from…

Nah - if you buy sumthing new it has to be looked after, something second hand and it doesn’t matter. If you want a snooze on your 45 just hop on your bunk in whatever you’re wearing, don’t matter if you’re a bit grumby. Life’s more comfortable when you don’t have to over focus on the cleanliness front.
Although there are lines that need to be drawn. Anyone watch that film on bbc iPlayer “Moon Dogs” (don’t watch it especially, it’s a waste of time, in fact its pretty crap) but anyway, the two hitchhikers, they climb on the lads bunk and start ■■■■■■■ as he’s rolling down the A90, didn’t even ask him to join in, even worse he didn’t even ask to join in. WTF was that all about, you would have to bin the duvet off after that.

Whatever floats yer boat mate, but the thought of kipping on a dubious duvet with somebody’s dodgy stains and bum hairs and what not all over it, doesn’t fill me with enthusiasm if I’m honest.
Anyway, I like to keep my cab interior clean and spotless…but hey!, that’s just me, each to his own and all that.

I have a nice artic type sleeping bagAre they the ones that bend in the middle ■■?
No they were designed for artics, you can roll them up and put them in the cupboard to save room, they were later adopted by people going camping
With mention of using 2 duvets, the newer 3 season duvets that are actually two duvets (10+4) is a good idea, and something I use at home
