Night rate

In agency work when does night rate usually start ?
Let’s say it starts at midnight and you work 1800hrs till 0300 hrs are the last 3 hours on night rate ?

yes

Yes, and agency night rate normally starts at 18:00 and ends at 06:00

i dont know about agency but im sure some of ours get paid night rate all shift as the major % of there shift is within the night shift criteria

I just this minute asked Dale, the agency driver currently piloting us up the M6, about this. He starts at 1915 and gets paid night rate from then. We should be done about 0400 but like me he gets 9.5 hours for the shift, with no breaks deducted as we don’t really have one, and he will get it all at night rate.

He sometimes does another of our shifts starting at 1800 and that is all at night rate as well.

That’s how I’ve always found it, used to start at 4pm until around 2am, and got night rate for the lot.

Night rate usually goes break free too, as an extra enhancement, if they don’t offer it, try asking for it.

Some agencies have their night rate start at midday until midnight.

Strange but true…

Ken.

Depends on the agency. I’ve had some apply it from 18:00 to 06:00, I’ve had others where I’ve started at 4pm, finishing at 2am and they’ve applied it to the whole shift. I’ve had some where I’ve started at 3am, finishing at Midday or later and only been paid the day rate.

Several agencies will pay you at the rate appropreate to the time of day you start, even if the rest of your shift runs into the evening or early hours. ie: you start at noon but do a 15hr shift, and finish at 03:00 the next morning. you will only get paid day rate because you started at noon. Ive had agencies book me for 16:00 start, but the night rate doesnt kick in until 16:01. But Im shrewd enough to relise that if I knock back the 16:00 start, but offer to start at 16:30, theyll usually see it my way. So we`ll end up coming to an agreement about rates & start times.

if in doubt … Always ask what the details of the pay rate are ££`s p/hr, overtime rates, & when it kicks in etc, before you take the booking for the job.
