I did the markets with Spanish onion imports,good cafes at most places and cheap,pump truck to shift ton and half pallets that would get stuck in the trailer,poor quality of wood for the pallets,and wrong way round pallets,that would be facing the wrong way to slide the pump truck under.

thanks for the replies. Not sure what you mean about paying the forklift drivers? Does it mean u have to pay them to unload you, and if so, do you claim it back from the company you work for?

Sometimes they’ll tip you other times you have to pay to use the forklift all depends where you are, who the forklift driver is and how busy he is. The best times to be in markets is early, eg before 2 because its easier to get forklifts and find a place to park.

Let us know how you get on mate, did the markets for one of my first weeks as a driver on the agency, was a total mind bending experience but a lot of fun once you get the hang of it.

It’s one of those jobs you can really enjoy yourself on as long as you play the system right.

thanks alot for the advice guys…thats alot to think about, I currently have an easy, but low paid day job in a rigid delivering plants, at £6.75 an hour, i get paid less than the guys serving burgers at McDonalds, but after 39hrs we get a tenner an hour ovetime…so I suppose I`ll have to decide if the wage on the night markets is worth the switch.

Doogie, I currently drive a class 2 in the day, easy job but ■■■■■ pay, the night market work ive been offered is in a class 1. Nice two year old Volvo compared to the 15 year old Scania heap I curently drive :slight_smile:

I had a little look and I can say i have been there before when i was 15. Only the once though, but i will never forget that place

It’s just like some of the others have said,once you’ve done it a time or two you’ll get the gist of it.
I used to to do the smithfield meat,spits,heathrow and covent garden and the same thing applies in them all…don’t be shy but don’t be pushy either or you will wait all night.

I agree the problem is every. One is paying bad wages at moment but there odd cuple firmes are paying good wage I drove an old f plat scania last week it was nice refurb I had to pick it up for my old man 143 420 and it had a stick not like these. Autos sorry mate was not being rood about wages just some compants take the mick

I agree, when the McDonalds down the road pay more than a class 1 driver gets hourly rate, then you know something is wrong!
