Night Driving

Does it take a while for your eyes to adjust to driving at night or am I just being a noob?
Feels very different on unlit roads visibility is ■■■■ poor apart from 50 feet in front of you and you cant see anything besides you unless other vehicles are near you. Roads I generally drive on don’t have cat eyes which makes it worse.

I guess you just get used to it after being on nights for a while.

You certainly have to concentrate a lot more on unlit roads at night though. I’m due to start my shift soon, and
I’ll being going over the Woodhead Pass (A628 Manchester to Sheffield), which is unlit and full of sharp twists
and turns over the Pennines…you can’t let your eyes or your concentration falter for a moment over there!

Much easier at night driving on motorways!

Whoops…double post…!

I don’t like night driving, especially in the rain just to make it worse. Ok going down a lit motorway but not so great on A or B roads. I find reversing more difficult too, I can bend it like Beckham in the day light, night time in the dark I bend it like the rest of em.

That as well. Especially when there is one bright floodlight or truck lights that are blinding you.

I think its the same for most really, well lit and smooth AR’s in the dark (and in the rain) not a problem at all, N roads ok for the most part, D roads with no st lighting pretty bad at times…

I quite like driving in the dark.

The main thing, in my opinion, is to remember that you can’t drive at daytime speeds unless you can get a good stretch where you can use your high beams… even then, the next corner will be a mystery.

Plenty of drivers will not seem to change their driving in the dark, not being able to see beyond their headlights doesn’t seem to bother them. Plenty of drivers also manage to hit bridges covered in warning signs in the daytime…

Keep all your glass as clean as possible.

I find that having the night light on in the cab helps when there is oncoming traffic but hinders when there is nothing.

If in doubt, slow down.

The edge of the road is harder to pick out and on top of that your depth perception is crap, so be very careful when you have to hug the nearside.

I seem to be a rarity then, I enjoy night driving, especially on unlit motorways and A Roads. Not a fan of street lit motorways

Are you maximising your use of main beam headlights ?.

I struggle with the lights from oncoming traffic at night. They really make my eyes tired, but in general I prefer the night and something you certainly need to become accustomed too.

i like nights for quieter roads .You will get used to it .

Definitely prefer night driving. Requires a lot more focus, especially so.e of the back roads. As someone above said, clean windows are a must.

Also… I always have enjoyed night driving. Unlit A roads no problem. Motorways no problem. Dual carriageway though seems to be wearing not sure if it constant oncoming headlight or just mind numbing.

I’m starting nights next week so I guess that answers that question

Also for anyone struggling with light glare try night driving glasses (polarised, yellow tint) they make a world of difference!

I work nights all the time. Of course, there’s a lot less traffic but a lot more roadworks! Whilst I don’t avoid motorways I find them a bit mind numbing; unlit b roads tend to keep your focus a lot more.

Yellow specs, just remember you’ve got them on and traffic lights will be a different colour. Takes the edge of some of the ultra bright xenon lights dazzle.

Came up the road from Girvan bound for near Elgin on Tuesday and met the darkness just passed Glasgow but on the single carrage way north of Perth and even further on when leaving the A9 at Aviemore I found it a real struggle, do I need my eyes tested again (but had just passed a Maritime and Coastguard Agency eye test a few days before) or is it because the dipped headlights in the recently bought BMW heap of ■■■■■■ useless piece of ■■■■■■ ■■■■ in regards to lights it should never have been allowed to grace our ■■■■ ■■■■■■ roads up here ■■?

I hate driving at night on a roads in thick fog, thats a ■■■■

BMW lights don’t light up the road, they are aimed at oncoming drivers to make sure that everyone knows it’s a BMW even at night
