I imagine the lorry magazines of the day were full of letters about drivers leaving piles of cinders on the floor and the service areas smelling of burnt soot.

50mph in a steam truck loaded with drum brakes and still virtually cart wheels for grip, balls of steel those guys !! No doubt they were thankfull of that 20mph speed limit :open_mouth:

I was on a go slow one day and poodling down the Witney Bypass at about 45, I got passed by a Sentinel. The fireman was working hard but the driver gave me a wave :laughing:
One elderly chap told me how as a lad working the Swinford Toll Bridge near Eynsham, he’d have a bucketfull of water with him; A local contractor hated paying the tolls so he got his firemen to drop a hot penny into the collectors hand off the shovel.
